We are seeking an ESL Instructor. The ideal candidate will be passionate about providing quality language education in a welcoming and collaborative environment, serving clients from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, and seeing both staff and students grow to reach their fullest potential.
Department Job Function:
The ESL Instructor will play a vital role in meeting the needs of adult immigrant and refugee students, and help them to reach their educational and professional goals. This position, under the supervision of the Adult Education and Literacy Manager, will create and refine existing curriculum to help students learn essential language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar). Outside of class, the ESL Instructor will be responsible for normal administrative duties, help to take part in recruitment and enrollment, and make contributions to the growth and quality of Trellus’ programming by teaching an additional class and/or assuming one of our program specialist roles (for example, teaching Healthcare ESL for students interested in learning more about U.S. jobs in the health sciences).
Responsibilities:
- Teach an ESL class to adult students daily (M-F) in-person and occasionally on Zoom/digital platforms, as needed.
- Coordinate curriculum and teaching materials with other teachers in adult education program.
- Maintain student enrollment and monthly attendance rates to meet the requirements by the funder.
- Monitor and review student information/progress on funder and agency data systems.
- Post daily on class pages on the program blog to help keep students informed about in-class assignments, upcoming events, and homework.
- Incorporate technology use into classroom to help build students’ digital literacy.
- Fulfill administrative duties as instructor to include attendance, pre- and post-testing, registration, and recruitment and retention efforts.
- Serve as one of our program specialists (Volunteer, Transitions, Media) or as an instructor for an additional course, comprising 25% of a regular work week
- Participate in regular staff development activities, both on- and off site.
- Work on projects as assigned or required by senior leadership in support of the Strategic Plan
- All other duties as assigned by the Adult Education and Literacy Manager
Qualifications (Skills, knowledge, & abilities):
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, English, Linguistics, TESOL, Adult Education, or related field (in lieu of relevant Bachelor’s Degree, a Bachelor’s Degree plus TESL/TEFL certification would also be accepted).
- Experience teaching ESL to adult immigrants and/or experience working with learners from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- High degree of initiative and sound decision-making ability.
- Ability to work collaboratively within the organization and on the Adult Education team.
- Exceptional attention to detail and care when working with student data and record-keeping for grant purposes.
- Thorough understanding of English and methods of instruction.
- Experience working with multi-level classes.
- Experience and comfort using technology for instruction and collaboration with other staff members.
- Must be able to lift up to twenty-five pounds of books and supplies.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk distance and up and down stairs, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms.
