Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit :

The School of Education is an academic unit reporting to the Provost. The School is a major center of research, teaching, and public service within the State of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. The School offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The mission of the School of Education is to conduct research, and generate basic and applied knowledge about human development, educational technology and entrepreneurship, teaching and learning, school counseling, school psychology, administration, as well as educational policy and leadership; prepare leaders in the profession of education by conducting outstanding research, teaching, and service; and assist in the development of strong and effective public schools in North Carolina. In order to fulfill its mission, the School is organized into three academic divisions : (1) Culture, Curriculum, & Teacher Education (CCATE), (2) Learning, Development & Psychological Sciences (LDPS), and (3) Educational Policy, Organization, & Leadership (EPOL).

Position Summary :

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Digital and Web Communications Manager is responsible for creating, managing, and maintaining a range of content for the School of Education’s digital and physical communication presences. Digital presences include the School’s primary website (ed.unc.edu), an intranet website, numerous auxiliary websites maintained for specialized audiences, and a digital signage platform. In addition to creating compelling and creative content, this will serve as project manager for the School’s digital content efforts. Project management includes, but is not limited to, some technical updates for School of Education website, the fulfillment of requests from School community members for website updates and content creation, management of ongoing work with external vendors to ensure the highest quality digital products, and management of the School’s web governance efforts, which include an annual, collaborative review of content on all School websites to ensure accuracy and clarity. All current School-owned websites are built using WordPress, and this position will utilize a moderate level of WordPress proficiency in this work. This position will also manage the School’s Google Analytics account, creating periodic reports to help guide the School’s website strategy and efforts. The position will plan, manage, and execute content both written and visual, short- and long-form for the School’s various publications. This position plays an active role in articulating and furthering the School’s ‘Propel the World’ brand message and the associated visual identity through creative digital content – all while adhering to web governance policies, brand guidelines, writing style guide, and digital accessibility policy.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to assess and synthesize data and information, identify opportunities, and draw sound conclusions that guide and / or support digital communications and marketing efforts.

They must have :

  • Moderate to high level of proficiency creating content – written and visual – for digital and printed publication
  • Moderate level of proficiency in WordPress management, site creation, and customization, utilizing CSS and plugins
  • Experience developing a range of content, written and visual, for different communications platforms
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere)
  • Experience with Google Analytics

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

Experience working :

  • In a higher education communications and marketing role
  • With RiseVision or comparable digital signage management platform
  • With enterprise-level cloud storage and collaboration software (Office 365)
  • With ticketing platforms for workflow and change tracking
