As a Fiber Drop Technician, you will be responsible for the construction, installation, and splicing of fiber optic cables from the main network to customer premises. This role involves operating various construction equipment (such as plows, mini-excavators, and bucket trucks) and working in all types of weather conditions. You will also splice fiber connections at customer locations to ensure service quality and reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate plows, mini-excavators, and bucket trucks to install fiber optic drops from the street to the customer premises.
- Perform all necessary construction tasks to lay fiber optic cable, including trenching, placing conduit, and running cable.
- Test fiber at customer premises to ensure the integrity of the connection and troubleshoot issues if necessary.
- Adhere to safety protocols and procedures while operating equipment and handling fiber optic cables.
- Collaborate with the splicing team to ensure seamless transition of work from construction to splicing and final testing.
- Work in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and rain, to meet project timelines.
- Communicate with supervisors, customers, and other stakeholders to ensure clarity and resolve any potential issues on-site.
Requirements
Requirements:
- Ability to learn and operate construction equipment, such as plows, mini-excavators, and bucket trucks.
- Basic knowledge of fiber optic splicing, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and plans.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and work on your feet for extended periods.
- Comfort working in confined spaces, on ladders, and at heights when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in fiber optic splicing and testing tools such as OTDRs.
- Experience in construction or installation of fiber optic networks preferred.
- Experience in repairing sprinkler systems or shallow copper communication lines during construction work.
- Outside Plant Experience.
- Previous experience working in telecommunications or utility construction.
