'Iolani School is seeking a Lower School Counselor beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year. The ideal candidate will have a deep passion for working with elementary-aged students (ages 4-12) and a strong commitment to supporting their social, emotional, and academic development. This individual will provide comprehensive counseling services to foster a positive and inclusive school environment where students feel supported in their personal growth and well-being.
The counselor will be responsible for providing individual and group counseling to students, addressing a range of topics including friendship skills, transitions, grief and loss, executive functioning skills, and other social-emotional needs. They will collaborate closely with faculty, staff, and parents to assess student needs and develop appropriate support strategies. In addition, they will play a key role in implementing and enhancing school-wide, grade-level, group, and individual behavioral support programs while also creating and co-teaching health and wellness education, life skills curriculum, and guidance lessons in a classroom setting. A crucial part of this role involves supporting the continued growth and implementation of the Lower School Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Program.
Beyond working directly with students, the counselor will serve as a resource and liaison for parents, providing education on relevant topics and offering guidance on student well-being. They will work closely with the Director of Social and Emotional Health, Lower School administrators, and other school counselors to coordinate student support efforts. Additionally, they will assist faculty and staff in organizing and participating in activities that enhance the school community. Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with students, families, and faculty is key to the success of this role. The counselor will also participate in Lower School leadership teams and contribute to strategic discussions on student wellness and support.
The ideal candidate will possess an advanced degree in School Counseling, Clinical Social Work, or Psychology, with a Master’s or doctorate degree preferred. Previous experience in an elementary school setting is highly desirable. A strong understanding of child development theory, behavioral intervention strategies, social skills training, and crisis intervention is essential, along with expertise in providing effective counseling interventions for children. Candidates should demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills. They should be proactive, self-directed, and capable of exercising sound judgment while demonstrating leadership and a commitment to fostering a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.
