Position Summary

The Grant Accountant will serve as the primary liaison between TU’s conservation programs in Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico and TU’s Accounting and Compliance department in Arlington, VA. The Grant Accountant will work closely with accounting and compliance staff to perform accounting and grants compliance tasks including invoicing, cash applications, accounting research, financial reporting, grants administration and systems data maintenance. The Grant Accountant will work closely with TU conservation staff in the field on budgeting and analyzing program and project expenses, preparing invoices and financial reports for funders and project managers, monitoring available funds, and assisting with annual program budgets.

The position may require infrequent job-related travel.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop a thorough understanding of project operations, revenues, expenditures, and grant compliance requirements.
  • Assist program staff in developing budgets for proposals and preparing proposals and reports to public and foundation funders and private donors.
  • Read and understand grant language and agreements to set up grants, assist with the execution of grant documents, and maintain a digital grant file archive through the life of the projects.
  • Maintain a list of grants and a schedule of grant due dates and work with project managers to prepare the required financial reports and invoices prior to due dates.
  • Prepare grant invoices and supporting documentation and assist national accounting staff in invoice entry and accounts receivables adjustments in the accounting system.
  • Prepare re-classifying journal entries.
  • Prepare and/or review compliance forms such as SF425 or SF270 invoicing.
  • Work with project managers to monitor and analyze project and program expenses to ensure alignment with grant requirements and budgets. Maintain close communication with project managers and assist in quantifying and forecasting surplus and deficits and pulling financial information.
  • Process incoming revenue/reimbursements and coordinate with program staff and national accounting staff to ensure that grants revenues are properly recognized under the appropriate grants and programs in the accounting system in accordance with established budgets.
  • Work with program staff and national accounting staff on grant reconciliation and close out at project end, as well as conducting annual review of projects at fiscal year-end.
  • Facilitate and assist with annual budget development for the CO, AZ, and NM programs.
  • Assist with audit preparation and requests.
  • Interface with program staff and national accounting staff to create training materials and improve internal processes and systems.
  • Assisting conservation staff in meeting procurement rules and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or related field required.
  • 3–5 years of experience in an accounting or finance role.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to identify and correct problems as they occur.
  • Understanding of nonprofit grant accounting functions.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy and self-review of work.
  • Excellent oral and written communication plus solid organizational and people skills.
  • Self-directed and motivated, able to manage multiple and complex assignments and meet deadlines and production schedules both independently and as part of a team.
  • Prior experience in administering federal and state grants (familiarity with USDA and DOI programs is a plus, including those administered by the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and US Fish and Wildlife Service)
  • Knowledge of applicable federal regulations (FAR, OMB Circulars, and AIDAR).
  • Must be available during Mountain Time working hours.
  • Passion for TU's mission and impact, and interest in conservation, water or fisheries is a plus and will help a successful candidate connect with TU's work and staff.
