Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and reliable Greenhouse Manager to oversee the daily operations of our greenhouse facility while also managing merchandising, retail sales, and customer service. This role is perfect for someone passionate about plant care, horticulture, and sustainable farming practices, with a keen interest in providing exceptional customer experiences and showcasing our plants for retail sales. The Greenhouse Manager will ensure the health of plants, manage seasonal growth cycles, supervise staff, maintain the greenhouse, and create attractive displays for our retail environment. This position is intended to be a long-term, seasonal role with the potential for renewal each year.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee Greenhouse Operations: Manage all aspects of the greenhouse, including plant care, irrigation systems, temperature control, and overall plant health.
- Plant Health Management: Monitor and maintain optimal environmental conditions (light, humidity, temperature) to ensure plant health. Diagnose and treat diseases, pests, and other issues that may arise.
- Supervise Staff: Lead and manage a small team of seasonal employees, providing guidance and training on proper plant care, safety, and greenhouse maintenance practices.
- Merchandising & Retail Sales: Create visually appealing plant displays in our retail space, ensuring plants are properly showcased for sale. Collaborate with the sales team to maintain product availability, assist with pricing, and ensure the sales floor reflects the company's branding and quality.
- Customer Service: Provide knowledgeable, friendly, and professional customer service to all retail customers. Assist customers with plant selections, care instructions, and any questions about the products sold. Maintain a high level of customer satisfaction through a positive and helpful approach.
- Inventory Management: Track inventory of plants, supplies, and materials needed for the greenhouse and retail sales. Order new supplies as required and ensure stock is rotated and displayed properly.
- Harvest and Planting Planning: Develop and implement planting schedules and harvest timelines based on seasonal requirements.
- Record Keeping & Reporting: Maintain detailed records on plant growth, pesticide use, fertilizer schedules, sales, and other pertinent data. Provide regular reports to management.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure that all safety regulations are followed, including proper handling of equipment, chemicals, and plant care tools.
Qualifications
- Preferred experience in greenhouse or horticulture management.
- Strong knowledge of plant care, pest management, and greenhouse systems.
- Experience in retail merchandising, sales, and customer service, particularly in a horticultural or garden center setting.
- Ability to work independently and manage a team effectively.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build customer relationships and provide exceptional service.
- Experience with greenhouse technologies, irrigation, and environmental control systems is preferred.
- Physical ability to perform tasks that may require bending, lifting, and working in varying environmental conditions (heat, humidity, etc.).
- A degree or certification in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field is a plus.
