Shelter Advocate – Troy
Joseph’s House & Shelter is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Shelter Advocate to join our team. This role involves working closely with shelter guests, providing support and advocacy to help them secure stable and sustainable housing.
About the Role
As a Shelter Advocate, you will carry a caseload and collaborate with a team to assist individuals experiencing homelessness. Using a Housing First approach and HarmReduction methods, you will meet clients where they are, helping them navigate barriers to permanent housing and essential services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide non-judgmental support to individuals facing challenges such as chronic homelessness, substance use, and mental health concerns.
- Assist program participants in achieving their personal goals while respecting their values, culture, and beliefs.
- Conduct assessments and make immediate referrals for housing, shelter, substance use treatment, and mental health services.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners and service providers.
- Demonstrate creativity, initiative, and teamwork while maintaining clear and professional communication.
- Maintain accurate documentation and utilize computer programs, including Microsoft Office, for case management.
- Adapt to a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends, as needed.
Qualifications
- Experience in advocacy, social services, or a related field (1 year preferred).
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License with a clean driving record (preferred).
- CPR and First Aid Certification (preferred).
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay: Starting at $17.00 per hour.

- Full-time (8-hour shifts)
Primarily Monday to Friday, with some on-call and evening availability as needed
