Estimator – Heavy Civil Construction

Job Summary: As an Estimator, you will be expected to lead the preparation of accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects. This role requires extensive experience in estimating, strong analytical skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. You will work in a team environment, led by the department head.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead the preparation of detailed cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs for assigned projects.
- Review project plans, specifications, and other documents to identify potential cost factors and develop comprehensive project scopes.
- Conduct site visits to assess project conditions and gather necessary data.
- Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive pricing.
- Analyze and evaluate proposals to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
- Collaborate with team members to develop accurate and comprehensive estimates.
- Prepare bid proposals and related documentation, ensuring all requirements and deadlines are met.
- Conduct risk assessments and value engineering analysis to optimize project costs.
- Maintain and update estimating databases and historical cost records. Mentor and guide junior estimators, providing training and support as needed.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and post-bid reviews as required.
- Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and best practices in estimating and construction.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in estimating, with a focus on heavy civil construction projects.
- Proficiency in HCSS Heavy Bid and Bluebeam software required.
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) required.
- Local and relative experience, both in private and public sectors, preferred.
- Experience in preparing proposals that includes union labor is preferred.
- Competence in Primavera P6 (or equal scheduling software) and AGTEK preferred.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills including email etiquette and client interaction.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
- Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry standards is essential.
