Job Summary
· This is one of thirteen Temporary Summer Assistants for which we are currently hiring. Should you choose to apply, you will have the opportunity to indicate which (or all) of the other positions interest you.
· The temporary summer assistant role is a 10-week, 20-hours per week temporary position. The Plaza Library Summer Assistant will support the Plaza Library by assisting in registering patrons for the annual summer reading program and helping to prepare programming materials. The compensation for this position is 16.44 per hour.
· Assist with daily operations of the Plaza Library by supporting staff in preparations for programming, patron engagement and willingness to help across audiences (adult, teen and children)
· This position will be from May 20 – July 26 with the following weekly schedule: Monday-Thursday 9-2. Orientation will take place from 10 am – 2 pm on the first three days of employment at the Central Library (14 W 10th St, Kansas City, MO 64105).
Job Duties And Responsibilities
· Encourage patrons of all ages to participate in the summer reading program. This includes, but is not limited to, in-person engagement, registering through an online platform, and redeeming prizes in the library, in the community, and online.
· Assist branch staff in entering data into the online summer reading platform and maintaining accurate records.
· Engage children, teens, and families in conversations about their reading and summer learning activities.
· Assist the Community Engagement Librarian in the creation of promotional materials for programming.
· Perform other duties specific to adult programming, including, but not limited to, assisting with special events, celebrations, or programs.
· Assist with the Library’s annual patron demographic survey by staffing a table at a branch and engaging patrons on May 29th.
· Work with Community Engagement Librarian to develop and implement a patron interest survey for folks 55 to gauge interest in arts programming.
Requirements
· Ability to meet and serve the public, working effectively with patrons.
· Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues and the public.
· Basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
· Ability to speak and understand English is required. Additional consideration may be given to individuals that are fluent in any non-English languages spoken in the Kansas City area including Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, French, Dari, Pashto, and Vietnamese.
· Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
· Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively to make program specific decorations and materials.
