Job Description

The Kansas Health Science University (KHSU)-Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (KansasCOM) has a 22,000‑square‑foot Simulation Center that features two high‑functioning simulation labs, inpatient and outpatient wings, high‑fidelity manikins, task trainers, and virtual‑/augmented‑reality classroom, all designed to deliver immersive, interprofessional learning experiences.

As the Director of Simulation, you will provide the strategic vision and day‑to‑day leadership that keep this state‑of‑the‑art environment, and its robust Standardized Patient (SP) program, operating at maximum educational impact. The role blends teaching, research, administration, and service to advance KHSU-KansasCOM’s mission of graduating practice‑ready osteopathic physicians.

Specific Responsibilities

Administration 50%

  • Oversee all Simulation Center operations (scheduling, staffing, resource management).
  • Manage maintenance and procurement of equipment, manikins, software, and AV systems.
  • Develop and monitor the Simulation Center budget, including forecasting and vendor relations.
  • Create and enforce policies, procedures, and safety protocols for center operations.
  • Coordinate cleaning, repairs, and preventive maintenance for equipment and learning spaces.
  • Leverage simulation‑management software and online tools for scheduling and assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with national standards and accreditation requirements.
  • Foster cross-departmental and external partnerships to expand simulation offerings.
  • Recruit, train, and schedule standardized patients in collaboration with faculty and staff.


Teaching 30%

  • Collaboratively design and facilitate simulation‑based educational and assessment experiences for students.
  • Partner with faculty to design, implement, and evaluate SP encounters.
  • Support the seamless integration of simulation into pre‑clinical and clinical curricula, ensuring alignment with program learning outcomes.
  • Lead evidence‑based debriefings that reinforce learning objectives.
  • Coach faculty in the effective use of simulation software, manikins, and AV tools.
  • Develop and maintain a repository of simulation scenarios, SP cases, and related teaching materials.
  • Lead faculty development sessions on simulation best practices, including pre‑briefing and debriefing strategies.


Research and Scholarly Activity 10%

  • Support faculty and staff in simulation‑related educational research or quality improvement projects.
  • Stay current with innovations, standards, and emerging trends in simulation‑based education.
  • Represent KHSU-KansasCOM at national and international forums to increase program visibility.
  • Disseminate scholarship of teaching and learning through presentations and publications.


Service 10%

  • Cultivate an inclusive, learner‑centered culture for students, staff, and faculty.
  • Serve on committees at the Dean’s discretion to advance institutional goals.
  • Act as the center’s ambassador, coordinating tours for prospective students, donors, and accreditors.
  • Assist with continuing education programs and interprofessional training.
  • Advise and mentor students, including supervision of student research.
  • Support accreditation and quality‑assurance processes related to simulation.
  • Participate in admissions interviews.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of KHSU-KansasCOM’s mission.


Required

QUALIFICATION(S):

  • Master’s degree in a health care related or education field (terminal degree preferred).
  • Minimum two (2) years of healthcare‑simulation experience in an academic setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise with simulation best practices, equipment, and standardized‑patient management.
  • Experience developing and managing a simulation‑center budget.
  • Good standing with all regulatory and governmental boards and agencies.
  • Proven leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.


Preferred

  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) or equivalent credential.
  • Clinical practice experience as a licensed healthcare professional (e.g., RN, NP, PA, DO, MD).
  • Experience in osteopathic medical education or interprofessional education environments.
  • Working knowledge of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) standards.
  • Familiarity with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) requirements.
