Position: Fire Engineer AEMT or Fire Engineer Paramedic

Reports to: Fire Captain

Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt (hourly)

Salary and Benefits

Engineer AEMT: $62,753 to $84,710

Engineer Paramedic: $73,265 to $98,920

GENERAL PURPOSE: Performs a variety of engineer AEMT/engineer paramedic and firefighting duties related to protecting the life and property of city residents. Performs advanced functions as a driver.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the close supervision of the fire captain or designated shift supervisor.

SUPERVISION GIVEN: Provides immediate to close supervision to firefighters or on a project-by-project basis

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

ENGINEER: Drives heavy fire apparatus to fire and emergency scenes; performs vehicle placement to achieve effective delivery of suppression materials (water/chemicals, etc.); operates fire pumps to control various nozzle pressures and flows; assures proper procedures are followed to engage, prime, and discharge supply lines.

Operates aerial ladder and specialty fire equipment at fire scenes as needed to rescue and remove victims or direct aerial ladder streams; calculates hydraulic formulas to determine nozzle pressure, gallons per minute, friction loss, elevation loss or gain, pump discharge pressure, etc.

Uses valves and hand tools to make hose connections; adjusts discharge to proper pressure rating as determined by hydraulic calculations; monitors pumper cooling systems, pressure relief systems, and discharge pressures; makes adjustments as needed.

FIREFIGHTER: Performs as a senior firefighter; takes the lead and serves as incident commander in the absence of a senior officer; assists with training of subordinate personnel.

Receives continuous classroom and field training in a wide range of fire prevention, AEMT, and firefighting techniques, principles, and procedures; receives specialized training in salvage and rescue operation, emergency medical aid, civil defense, hazardous materials, disaster, drowning, and other related emergency situations; participates in drills.

Responds to fire alarm signals; performs as member of firefighting team; responds to emergency calls by riding fire truck to scene of fire; manipulates various sized appliances, nozzles, hose streams; lays and connects water hose, hooks up pump, holds nozzle and directs water stream; raises and climbs ladders and utilizes other specialized equipment such as chemical fire extinguisher, SCBA's, encapsulated chemical suits, power saws; operates extension ladders in actual rescue situations and in regular training; uses various hand tools such as rope, axes, etc.

Searches in adverse conditions at fire scene, natural disasters, auto accidents, etc.; rescues victims from fire and other danger situations; operates hydraulic rescue tool to achieve forcible entry; renders first aid and practices trauma management; performs basic life support to accident and fire victims; removes bodies and performs salvage operations.

Receives instruction on policies and procedures to conduct fire prevention inspections on various types of facilities; conducts inspections and advises resident or owner of necessary action to conform to standards; assists in performing fire scene investigations to determine "point of origin" and cause of fires; prepares and submits a variety of reports related to inspection activities and suppression.

Performs general maintenance necessary to upkeep department building and equipment; sweeps and cleans station floors and rooms, makes beds, washes walls, floors, and windows; performs various maintenance tasks, i.e. paints, services equipment, cleans, polishes, tests, and repairs firefighting apparatus and breathing apparatus; services, maintains, and repairs fire trucks.

Assists in performing building inspections and pre-fire planning; attends public gatherings to ensure observance of fire safety requirements, standards, and regulations; conducts tours for interest groups.

Prepares various department records and reports; inspects fire hydrants; may instruct Boy Scout merit badge classes; participates in various public fire safety programs and presentations to educate regarding fire prevention.

AEMT: Evaluates patient's condition and/or injuries and accident scenes and/or medical emergencies and administers aid as per protocol; monitors patient's vital signs and provides basic life support until transported to the hospital.

Operates resuscitation and suction devices during cardiopulmonary resuscitation; applies vacuum splints, cervical collars, backboards, and various other medical devices used to immobilize patients during transport and extrication.

Applies bandages and dressings on soft tissue injuries as needed to stop bleeding; applies pneumatic anti-shock pants on patients as per protocol to maintain the profusion of their vital signs; lifts and carries patients from scene to ambulance according to established procedures.

Performs related duties as required.

OR

PARAMEDIC: Performs various lead worker duties; assists to coordinate and schedule continuing education programs, workshops and seminars consistent with EMT licensing requirements; coordinates with state regulatory agencies as needed; provides mentoring supervision to less experienced EMT personnel; may assist to evaluate AEMT performance; may make recommendations affecting employment status, i.e., retention, advancement, discipline or discharge.

Responds to emergency medical calls; utilizes radio communications to receive and transmit communications; operates ambulance under emergency conditions and normal conditions to transport accident victims and emergency medical patients to health care facilities, hospitals or other institutions.

Performs advanced life support procedures such as direct larynogoscopy, endocracheal intubation (orotrachael & nasotracheal), endotrachael suctioning, translayngeal jet insufflation, surgical cricothyrotomy, needle thoracostomy, femoral venous access, ECG interpretation, synchronized cardioversion, defibrillation, transcutaneous cardiac placing and use of infusion pumps; administers advanced medications i.e., adenosine, albuterol, atrophine, dextrose (oral and injectabel), nitroglyucerine, dopamine HCI, diazepam, etc.; utilizes various advanced routes for medication administration, i.e., endotrachael, intrademal, intradermal, intramuscular, intraosseous, intravenous, nebulized aerosol, parenteral, rectal, subcutaneous, sublingual, topical, etc.; monitors special medications, i.e., aminophylline, antibiotics, blood products, fibrolytic drugs, insulin, mannitol, etc.; may perform rapid sequence intubation and ipratroprium bromide inhalation therapy as directed.

Performs intermediate level emergency medical procedures such as blood drawing, external jugular access, subcutaneous injections, intravenous injections, nebulized inhalations, intradermal biological testing, immunological vaccination administrations; administers various advanced levels of medications, i.e., epinephrine, NTG7, morphine 6, glucagons 8, diphenhydramine 9, etc.; monitors potassium IV drips 4.

Operates resuscitation and suction devices during cardiopulmonary resuscitation; applies vacuum splints, cervical collars, backboards, and various other medical devices used to immobilize patients during transport and extrication.

Applies bandages and dressing on soft tissue injuries as needed to stop bleeding; applies pneumatic anti-shock pants on patients as per protocol to maintain profusion of patient's vital signs; lifts and carries patients from scene to ambulance according to established procedures; performs various basic life saving procedures such as pulse oximetry, blood glucometry, oxygen administration, ventilator applications, splinting, oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway placement, combi tube placement, semi-automatic defibrillation, oral glucose administration, and approved chemical/medication administrations, etc.; assists with emergency child birth.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from high school (or equivalent); and
  • Four (4) years of full-time work experience as a firefighter; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of firefighting methods, techniques, and procedures; firefighting equipment types and varieties and their most appropriate and effective use; equipment maintenance and care; state and city codes, laws, and regulations, and ordinances related to fire prevention; fire vehicle equipment and apparatus operation; emergency driving techniques associated with heavy fire fighting apparatus; emergency medical techniques and procedures and first-aid; interpersonal communication skills. Working knowledge of training methods and techniques.

Ability to follow detailed verbal or written work instructions; work in dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; assimilate modern fire prevention and firefighting skills; perform under extreme weather conditions; work on call and on shift work; develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have and maintain a valid State of Utah driver's license and be deemed insurable
  • Must be certified as a State Firefighter II
  • Must be certified as State ADO-A and ADO-P
  • Must be Hazardous Materials Operations certified
  • Must be certified/licensed Utah State and National Registry AEMT or Utah State and National Registry Paramedic
  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800
  • Must become CPR/BLS, ACLS, and PALS within 12 months of appointment, and Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I, and Fire Inspector I within two years of appointment
  • Must be bondable

Employee will also occasionally be required to perform a variety of physically demanding maneuvers and activities while involved in firefighting and rescue operations, including running, walking, stooping, bending, rolling, crawling, climbing, jumping, lifting, carrying, dragging, and safely operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Functions of the position are generally performed in a controlled environment, but are subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency response travel is expected in the normal course of performing duties. Many functions of the work pose a high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of job retention. Various levels of mental application required, i.e., memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem solving. Continuous use of motor skills.
