Sr Network Engineer Ciena Routing and Switching / PON / Carrier Ethernet
The Sr Network Engineer is responsible for design and implementation of the Omni Fiber Network and its customer-serving equipment. This is senior position that designs network solutions to meet business requirements, publishes configuration guidelines and templates, engineers those designs into working network implementations, and troubleshoots/resolves issues with those implementations. This position focuses primarily on the engineering of Ciena routing and switching, access, and PON network elements for commercial ethernet virtual circuits (MPLS EVC/ELINE/ELAN). This is not a Transport/ROADM/Optical-focused role.
Responsibilities
40% Implement and oversee the implementation of network equipment, circuits, peering, and other network support functions in a rapidly growing service provider network
30% Design and configure network equipment for new business requirements. Publish network standard, configuration templates, guidelines. Maintain documentation.
20% Provide 3rd level support for NOC and advanced technical support escalations
10% Other technical work as directed
Hours, On-Call, Travel
Standard office hours are Monday through Friday, 9AM to 6PM Local time. Hybrid In-Office/Work-From-Home and flexible hour options available. Candidates for the position will be expected to work occasional maintenance window activities (Midnight to 5AM ET) and provide occasional on-call support for escalations off-hours / weekends. Occasional travel is required for team planning sessions and local operations activity at a remote data center or field site. Candidates must have and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate a rental car or company vehicle.
Experience Required
- Minimum 9 years experience in an IT or Internet service related technical field

**Fiber / PON / DSL or Cable broadband network experience is required
**Ciena SAOS equipment experience is required
Skills Required
- Design, configuration, and troubleshooting of routing and switching technologies in common use in service-provider networks
- BGP, IPv6, MPLS and VPNs, NAT/CG-NAT, BGP, OSPF-TE, Service Provider Switching (QinQ, L2VPN/EVC), Tunnel protocols (L2TP/IPSec/GRE), H-QoS for Triple-Play
- Juniper / Cisco / Microtik routers and switches
- Fiber OLT/ONT/ONU PON platforms and technologies
- Familiarity with Commercial Ethernet, EIA/DIA circuits, NIDs, and common transport technologies
Knowledge of common Network Operations Center incident management processes, including ticketing, incident handling, customer notifications, root cause analysis / post-mortem documentation, and change management procedures
Any of the following technical certifications are desired:
Ciena - CRS-P/CRS-C and/or CE-P
Cisco - CCNP or higher (Service Provider tracks preferred)
Juniper - JNCIS or higher (Service Provider tracks preferred)
Nokia - NRS-I/II or higher
Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) Professional
Equivalent professional certifications from any other vendor or networking related field
Candidates will be required to obtain and maintain professional Ciena CRS and MEF / Ciena CE certifications as part of their job role
Additional Skills
- Broadband customer troubleshooting and current or prior technical support skills
- Knowledge of TCP/IP and the common applications of the Internet
- Ability to navigate and guide others through Windows, Linux, and common Mobile platforms in GUI and CLI to perform network troubleshooting
- Knowledge of broadband home routers and the configuration/troubleshooting of both basic and advanced home broadband technologies (DHCP, NAT, Port Forwarding, UPnP, Firewall and Anti-Virus)
- Familiarity with WiFi technologies, including Mesh technologies and troubleshooting common WiFi connectivity and speed issues
- Familiarity with the concepts and implementation of subscriber provisioning for broadband triple-play services
Customer service and speaking skills
Fluency in English is required (fluency in any 2nd language desired)
Conflict resolution and de-escalation of difficult customer interactions
An always-helpful positive attitude
Desired Skills
- Familiarity with internet caching technologies and CDNs
- Familiarity with common service provider level security threats and mitigation methods
- Knowledge of Windows / Linux system administration and common administration tasks
