ABOUT THE JOB:

Job Title: Machinery Maintenance Technician

Classification: Full-time, Hourly Non-Exempt

Location: Kymera - Thermal Spray Solutions (TSS), Chesapeake, VA

Reports To: Production Manager

Job Overview

The Maintenance Technician plays a critical role in maintaining and troubleshooting equipment in a small machine shop environment. This hands-on role requires strong problem-solving skills to ensure efficient operation of equipment, including 480/220 V and 115 V electrical systems, plumbing, and mechanical components. Candidates should have 5–10 years of experience in facilities and equipment maintenance, with a focus on mechanical and electrical systems. Additional responsibilities include managing maintenance contractors, performing small building maintenance tasks (training provided), managing the preventive maintenance program and ensuring compliance with safety protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures.

Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting:

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair industrial equipment while ensuring power is safely off during maintenance.
  • Conduct regular inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs to minimize downtime.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical issues, including checking equipment resistance.
  • Calibrate tools and equipment as needed.
  • Understand the operation and maintain of heavy-duty machining tools, such as lathes, mills, and grinders.

Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Work:

  • Perform mechanical repairs with 3 years of experience in mechanical systems.
  • Handle electrical maintenance tasks with 1–2 years of experience.
  • Conduct plumbing/pipefitting tasks with 1 year of experience in equipment, residential, or commercial settings.

Shop Equipment Safety:

  • Assist in managing the facility's lockout/tagout program (training provided).
  • Follow safety protocols and train others on equipment safety procedures.
  • Contribute to facility and equipment security to ensure compliance and employee safety.

Maintenance Contractor Management:

  • Coordinate and oversee external contractors for specialized maintenance tasks as needed.

Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, and updates to ensure proper tracking and compliance.

Small Building Maintenance Tasks:

  • Perform basic building maintenance and repairs, with training provided.

Collaboration & Training:

  • Work with the operations leadership, and team members to resolve complex issues.
  • Train others on equipment operation and safety practices.

Requirements:

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong mechanical skills (primary focus), followed by electrical and plumbing abilities.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Flexibility to adapt to a dynamic small-team environment with varied responsibilities.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Continuous improvement mindset and adaptability to manage change in a growing company.
  • Reliability and attention to detail to ensure safe and effective maintenance operations.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • "US Person" for ITAR regulation contractual compliance purposes: The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) defines a U.S. person as: A person who is a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident (green card holder), or protected individual.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Ability to travel to company worksites is a plus.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 5–10 years of experience in facilities and equipment maintenance.
  • 3 years of mechanical experience.
  • 1–2 years of electrical experience.
  • 1 year of plumbing/pipefitting experience.

Additional Skills & Experience (Preferred):

  • Experience operating forklifts and overhead cranes.
  • Familiarity with precision measuring tools such as micrometers, height gauges, and calipers.

Physical and Travel Requirements:

  • Ability to Travel (<25%): travel may be required, including international travel, to visit and perform troubleshooting of onsite equipment.
  • for training, potential onsite repairs.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform manual tasks, including reaching, bending, stooping, and climbing.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work at heights.
  • Capability to safely operate machinery and tools.
  • Ability to successfully complete a drug screening, eye exam, hearing exam, and respirator fit test (if required for safety compliance).
  • Ability to pass hearing and eye exams, wear PPE, and work in a physically demanding industrial environment.
