The Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA) administers and manages the $80 billion retirement fund for the County of Los Angeles. We provide retirement, disability, and death benefits to eligible County employees and their beneficiaries, and collect, deposit, invest, and manage retirement funds collected from the County, outside districts, and County employees.
The Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA) Internship Program is a continuous, as needed, opportunity for both highly motivated and aspiring undergraduate and graduate interns. This is an exciting opportunity for students to gain paid experience and on-the-job training at a government entity. LACERA is an independent governmental entity, separate and distinct from Los Angeles County.
As one of the largest county retirement systems in America, LACERA offers potential Interns the opportunity to work in a variety of fields through each LACERA Division. Examples of each Division and the type of work done will be described in detailed.
LACERA's Internship Program give candidates the opportunity to develop in areas such as professional skills, personal development and life experiences guided by an assigned LACERA Mentor.
The intern will response to our organization's growing need for efficient records management. The Records and Information Managment unit seeks a highly motivated, detail-oriented, meticulous intern to spearhead a comprehensive records management project. This role will involve conducting a thorough organization-wide inventory of business records and utilizing advanced data analysis techniques to extract valuable insights. The intern will play a pivotal role in assessing the current state of our records and formulate recommendations for updating the Records Retention Schedule and ensuring compliance with industry regulations. This hands-on experience will give the intern valuable records management skills and significantly enhance our overall organizational efficiency and information governance.
Human Resources has one open intern position in the Employee and Organizational Development unit. The Intern will work on completing remaining work on organization-wide career paths and support objective 3.2 programs. This program will provide the students with hands-on experience that increases their professional preparedness.
The intern will be working on the knowledge management and implementation of the information security program (IT GRC) projects.
Member Services is dedicated to continually improving the member experience across all channels. The division is on furthering member education, supporting LACERA’s strategic plan and building a Superior Member Experience.
The Intern will assist and gain experience in different units of Member Services. In the Member Services Center, the Intern would assist with scheduling, workshops, calendars, and office support. In the Member Services Care unit, they would assist with tracking process and SharePoint support. There is an opportunity within the division to support the specialist with their work. The Intern would engage in a series of hands-on projects that do not require knowledge of CERL, PEPRA, or any other member benefits information.
The Quality Assurance Division provides coordination and data consolidation services in association with the compilation of the annua CEM (Cost Effective Management) Benchmarking report. This process currently uses Microsoft Excel worksheets and a manual workflow that requires participants from across LACERA's division to spend at least 120 hours across several months, under strict deadlines, to extract, compute and transmit to QA, and ultimately CEM, a wide range of statistical data. The Intern will help with administer this process and, if qualified, develop an application to improve its efficiency while increasing the value of the resulting data through improved analytics and data visualization tools.
The Intern will assist the department's collaboration with the Member Operations Group Audit Platform (MOGAP) in standardizing and automating the quality metrics and enrollment forms' verification in the Quality Control Section.
Systems
The System Division is seeking five Interns: two for the Business Solution unit, two for the Infrastructure Unit, and one for the Project Management Office.
The Business Solutions Interns will work on optical character recognition (OCR) and Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives.
The Infrastructure Interns will join the engineering team to support and learn about LACERA's onsite data center.
The Project Management Office Intern will participate in ongoing projects as a junior project manager.
The objective for our Interns is to provide meaningful work experiences for Information Technology students, gain energetic resources with fresh perspectives for short-term projects, and identify qualified candidates for potential permanent position within our division.
- A completed online application must be submitted on LACERA's NeoGov site, along with completion of the supplemental questionnaire.
- A cover letter, resume, and copy of latest school transcripts must be attached to application.
- The Internship Program is open only to currently enrolled students either pursuing an Associates, Bachelor, or Graduate degree. A student may either be attending school on a full-time or part-time status.
- No less than an overall C (2.0) grade point average (GPA).
- Must pass a security clearance background and credit check.
- To prevent related party conflicts of interest, LACERA may not contract with a person who is related to: a Board Member, the Chief Executive Officer, anyone reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, or anyone serving as a Division Head.
Related parties of other LACERA staff members may be considered for contract with LACERA provided the candidate possess all the selection criteria. Such a related party may not be contracted to a position which would: (1) Create either a direct or indirect supervisor/subordinate relationship with a related party; or (2) Create either an actual conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict of interest.
- Interns will be given the opportunity to work flexible hours. The working times must be within the days of Monday through Friday from the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
- Interns working five (5) hours per day must take a minimum thirty (30) minute/ maximum sixty (60) minute, non-paid lunch break. Interns working eight (8) hours per day will be given two (2) 15-minute breaks and must take a non-paid lunch break.
- Management has the discretion to dictate the number of hours that the Intern will complete each week.
- Interns will not be allowed to work more than forty (40) hours per week.

COMPENSATION:
Interns will be given compensation based on their grade level at the time of assignment. Undergraduates will be assigned up to $25.00 per hour. Graduate students and above will be assigned up to $27.00 per hour.
As this is not a permanent LACERA position covered under Civil Service Rules, Interns will not be employees of LACERA and will not be eligible for any LACERA employee benefits.
