The ideal candidate will ensure smooth running of the office and effective case management by providing legal services under the supervision of an attorney. This individual will communicate frequently with the clients in order to serve them adequately. Additionally, this candidate will conduct necessary case research to aid the legal proceedings.
Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys with case preparation, including drafting, editing, and filing legal documents such as petitions, motions, briefs, and applications.
- Conduct client intake interviews, gather necessary documents, and update client files.
- Maintain and organize case files, ensuring all documentation is properly filed and easy to retrieve.
- Communicate with clients, witnesses, and other professionals in both English and Spanish to collect information and update them on case progress.
- Schedule and coordinate appointments, hearings, and meetings for attorneys and clients.
- Prepare and review forms for submission to the court, government agencies (USCIS, ICE, etc.), and other legal entities.
- Conduct legal research as required by attorneys for case preparation and strategy.
- Draft and send correspondence to clients, court officials, and other involved parties.
- Prepare and file immigration forms, petitions, and applications with USCIS, Immigration Court, and other relevant agencies.
- Assist with translating legal documents and client communications between Spanish and English.
- Manage the attorney's calendar, including reminders for important deadlines and hearings.
- Ensure confidentiality and compliance with all legal and ethical standards.
Qualifications
- Fluency in Spanish and English (written and spoken)
- Associate's Degree or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a legal assistant or in a similar administrative role in a law office or legal setting
- Strong writing skills
- Strong knowledge of legal terminology, office practices, and procedures
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and office equipment (phones, fax, printers)
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, in both Spanish and English
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive client information
- Attention to detail and accuracy in drafting legal documents and correspondence
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude
- Experience with immigration law and related legal procedures is preferred, but not required
