Ledgent Finance & Accounting's client is currently seeking a highly experienced Senior Accountant with significant municipal experience to join their finance team. In this role, you will leverage your expertise in governmental accounting to manage complex financial processes, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and support strategic financial decision-making. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in municipal accounting and a deep understanding of public sector financial operations.
Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in accordance with government accounting standards and policies.
- Provide insightful financial analysis and variance explanations to support departmental and executive decision-making.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Lead the preparation of annual budgets, periodic forecasts, and financial planning initiatives.
- Collaborate with municipal departments to ensure budget alignment with strategic objectives and regulatory requirements.
Reconciliations & Internal Controls:
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and adherence to established controls.
- Implement and maintain robust internal control processes to safeguard municipal assets and ensure compliance.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure that all financial practices are in compliance with applicable local government regulations and accounting standards.
- Coordinate with external auditors during audits and prepare required documentation and financial reports.
Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities to enhance accounting procedures and systems for increased efficiency and accuracy.
- Develop and implement best practices in municipal accounting and financial management.
Team Collaboration & Leadership:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams and provide guidance to junior accounting staff.
- Mentor team members and foster an environment of continuous improvement and professional development.
Qualifications
- Education & Certification:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification is highly preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience with at least 2 years in a municipal or public sector environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in governmental accounting practices, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems commonly used in the public sector.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling.

Competitive salary with a range of $85,000 to $110,000 annually.
