Job Overview

A Service Captain plays a crucial role in delivering an exceptional dining experience by providing attentive, friendly, and professional service to guests. The captain is responsible for taking orders, serving food and beverages, and ensuring customer satisfaction throughout the dining experience, while also having a strong focus on tableside detail. This position requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. Captains are also expected to have a deep knowledge of the menu, make recommendations, address any guest inquiries, and collaborate with kitchen and bar staff to ensure smooth service. The ability to communicate any guest allergy concerns in a confident manner and accurate delivery of dietary restrictions to the kitchen and service team is a must. A successful Service Captain is personable, efficient, and dedicated to creating a welcoming atmosphere for every guest.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Guest Interaction: Greet and warmly welcome guests on arrival, and provide detailed information on food and beverage offerings, including daily specials.
2. Order Taking: Accurately take food and drink orders, relay them to the kitchen and bar, and ensure all modifications and special requests are communicated clearly.
3. Food and Beverage Service: Serve food and beverages promptly and courteously, checking back with guests to ensure satisfaction and address any concerns or additional requests. Assist with set up and breakdown of service including a lead role in running and closing side-work duties.
4. Menu Knowledge: Maintain thorough knowledge of the menu, including ingredients, preparation methods, and beverage pairings, to answer guest questions and make recommendations.
5. Table Management: Set and clear tables efficiently, ensuring cleanliness and readiness for the next guests.
6. Check Handling: Present guest checks, process payments, and handle transactions accurately and responsibly.
7. Training and Development: Assist in training junior staff on service techniques, steps of service and proper etiquette.
8. Team Collaboration: Work closely with kitchen and bar staff to ensure smooth and coordinated service and assist with other tasks as needed to maintain a well-functioning dining environment.
9. Compliance: Follow all health and safety regulations, including proper food handling.

Qualifications:

1. Prior experience as a server or in the hospitality industry is necessary to be considered for this role.
2. Strong customer service skills with a positive and professional attitude.
3. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks.
4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
5. Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.
6. Knowledge of food safety standards and responsible alcohol service is a plus.
7. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Work Environment:

Ensure uniform and personal appearance are clean and professional, maintain confidentiality of proprietary information, and protect company assets. Speak with others using clear and professional language. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with others, support team to reach common goals, and listen and respond appropriately to the concerns of other employees. Ensure adherence to quality expectations and standards. Read and visually verify information in a variety of formats (e.g., small print). Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire work shift. Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 50 pounds without assistance. Grasp, turn, and manipulate objects of varying size and weight, requiring fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Move through narrow, confined, or elevated spaces. Move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces as well as up and down stairs and/or service ramps. Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Perform other reasonable job duties as requested by Supervisors. Participates in the development and implementation of corrective action plans. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
