GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the direction of the department head or designee, the Payroll Specialist performs a variety of payroll-related functions related to the maintenance, review, reconciliation and adjustment of payroll data, including processing payroll, maintaining records and ensuring compliance with County policies and procedures .
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Enters payroll data, which may include attendance, overtime, and processing special pays as appropriate into the payroll system.
Processes and performs various payroll functions related to the maintenance, review, reconciliation, transmission and adjustment of payroll data.
Calculates, compiles, transmits and reviews payroll data, which may include hours worked, taxes, insurance and various deductions.
Reviews and reconciles errors to ensure accurate payroll records.
Prepares, voids, and issues paychecks, on a County-wide basis, as directed.
Prepares periodic reports (eg. earnings, taxes, and deductions).
Assists with year-end processing for W-2's and 1099's for County employees and retirees.
Serves as a payroll subject matter expert, on a County-wide basis, and team member of the County's financial system group (currently Workday).
Processes accounts payable for vendors, including verifying invoices, issuing check requests, on a departmental basis, copying and sending requests to Finance.
Manages, records and enters employee compensatory time activity on a departmental basis.
Enters purchase requests, on a departmental basis, to maintain inventory and supplies.
Assists staff on a departmental basis with any issues that involve payroll, such as overtime time, comp time, and leave bank usage.
Serves as the backup to the Payroll Specialist Senior position as needed.
Operates an automobile to perform assigned job functions.
Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in time / attendance or payroll / retiree processing
