Canal Operator I
Temporary Full-Time
Salary Range: $39,270 – $65,936
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Overview of Position: Under direction of the Operations Supervisor, regulate the flow and distribution of surface water to users through a series of canals and pipelines and record water usage. Assists with maintenance activities during off season.
Some Essential Duties include:
- Accepts requests for water and orders the needed amounts from the distribution system
- Ensures the proper flow and delivery of surface water in an assigned area
- Regulates head gates, turnouts, and diversions to ensure proper water levels
- Keeps distribution system free of obstructions
- Keep in constant contact with growers to advise them on their scheduled water orders
- Inspects system for leaks and breaks
- Prepares daily water delivery report, update electronic data entry to satisfy water orders
- Informs Maintenance Department of any failure in the distribution system
- Will be transferred into the Maintenance Department in the off-season and perform such duties as: building pipelines, installing boxes and gates, exposing underground utility lines, spraying pesticides, burning weeds, and concrete work
- Performs related duties as needed
Qualifications:
Education – Graduation from high school
Experience – Knowledge of crops and irrigation practices is desired
Licenses, Registration, Accreditation, etc.: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License will be required at the time of appointment. Possession and proof of a driving record free of multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for two (2) consecutive years.
