The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, Division of Animal and Plant Health is recruiting to fill the position of District Humane Agent in Kennebec, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, Waldo counties.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is in the Office of Animal Welfare. Duties include the investigation of animal welfare complaints, report writing, public education of animal welfare issues, and inspections of areas where animals are kept. The Humane Agent will enhance and maintain positive relationships with animal welfare, law enforcement, and other related personnel and agencies within the State.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A combination of education, training and/or experience that demonstrates proficiency in the knowledge of or professional expertise in the proper care, handling, nutrition/maintenance, and treatment of small and large animals (to include horses) -OR- professional experience in animal control or humane enforcement and/or veterinary technician experience.

Preference will be given to those with at least two (2) years of experience in Animal Control, Sheltering, or as a Veterinary Technician.

Other Preferences Include

  • General understanding of companion and large animal husbandry, animal handling, and animal welfare principles.
  • General understanding of animal infectious disease control and prevention
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Must have the ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or be on-call after hours.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: Must be willing to attend out-of-state training or travel overnight within the state as required. Must be willing to work paid overtime or drive in inclement weather as required. The successful applicant must have a valid driver’s license as MMPI inspectors use state vehicles to perform inspections. Competency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) products is required.

Must complete USDA-FSIS Food Inspector and USDA-FSIS Inspection Methods training with a passing grade.

RESIDENCY PREFERENCE: Live in Kennebec, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, or Waldo county -OR- be willing to commute to an in-district state office.

Automatic Disqualifiers – Applicants will be automatically be eliminated (disqualified) from the application/hiring process if they: have been convicted of murder, a Class A or Class B offense, a violation under Title 17-A, chapter 9, 11, 12 or 13, a violation of Title 19-A, section 4011 or a criminal violation under Title 17, Chapter 42 or a person who has been adjudicated of a civil violation for cruelty to animals under Chapter 739 or who has been convicted or adjudicated in any other state, provincial or federal court of a violation similar to those specified above.
