Make-A-Wish Michigan is dedicated to granting life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Our mission is fueled by brand awareness, medical teams feeling equipped and empowered to refer patients, the generosity of our donors and the dedication of our staff team and volunteers. We're seeking a dynamic individual to join us in furthering the Make-A-Wish mission through relationship building with medical professionals and the intake and processing of referrals to our program.
Position summary:
The Medical Intake and Outreach Sr. Coordinator who reports to the Director of Medical Outreach and Hospital Partnerships, will be responsible for relationship building and managing partnerships with specific hospitals and treatment centers in the state. This includes one-on-one meetings and onboarding of medical professionals, public speaking at various events to share about the impact and power of a wish in the lives of children battling critical illness, and stewarding the teams we work with. This role will also be responsible for the intake of referrals and gathering additional medical information from the child’s family and/or medical team so the organization is able to determine eligibility for a wish.
The ideal candidate would have knowledge and experience working with the pediatric population, preferably experience or education working in the medical field. Preferred skills include medical terminology certification, public speaking ability and comfort, flexibility throughout the week to be on the road to different hospitals/clinics.
Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Manage part of the intake and medical eligibility process
- Processes majority of the incoming referrals from start to finish, including:
- All family communications
- All medical team communications
- Sending/processing all Make-A-Wish forms
- Processes majority of the incoming referrals from start to finish, including:
- Responsible for adhering to National’s governing policies, performance standards and guidelines
- Provide support to the Director of Medical Outreach & Hospital Partnerships for wish reveals and state-wide referral drives throughout the year
- Medical outreach and stewardship
- In-person hospital/clinic visits and meetings with a focus on locations in the West Michigan and Northern Michigan territories including but not limited to: Bronson, Munson, WMED, Sparrow/MSU Health, UofM Health West, and Helen DeVos Specialty Center Lansing
- Support partnership and stewardship with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital
- Support state-wide partnership and stewardship initiatives
- Onboarding of new referral sources
- Plan and execute events and hospital opportunities such as wish reveals/celebrations, referral drives, craft opportunities for patients, etc.
- Attend medical conferences and hosting Make-A-Wish information booths
- Conduct grassroots outreach to clinics and community groups to share referral info with a focus on reaching diverse families
- Represent MAWMI in the community at events
- Some nights and weekends required
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably a degree related to the medical field such as nursing, medical assisting, etc. Other preferred degrees/backgrounds include social work, child life specialist, medical sales, etc.
- 3-5 years of professional work experience required.
- Commitment to and a passion for the mission of Make-A-Wish Michigan and reaching every eligible child.
- Commitment to reaching eligible children in underserved communities and a passion for being a part of our organization’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging initiatives.
- Ability to drive new referrals through outreach to new medical teams, follow up and follow through, and the ability to manage time and budget wisely in planning meetings and opportunities out in the field.
- Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office and database management, preference for familiarity with Salesforce.
- Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with medical teams, parents or legal guardians who have referred a child to us, wish families, senior management, and staff.

- Comfortable speaking in front of groups of varying sizes to convey the Make-A-Wish mission and eligibility criteria
