What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Veterinary Technician position at Malletts Bay Veterinary Hospital?
Malletts Bay Veterinary Hospital is a 6-doctor practice, providing complete care to our canine and feline patients. We are seeking a full-time certified or licensed veterinary technician who has excellent client communication skills, is customer service oriented, and is friendly with staff, clients and their pets. The ideal candidate must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and have basic computer literacy skills. The candidate must be able to work well independently and in a group. Starting wage will be assessed based on previous experience and responsibilities.
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Ability to learn and properly use IDEXX Cornerstone practice management computer software and computers.
- Perform venipuncture and placement of iv catheters.
- Properly restrain animals, including fractious pets, for examination and treatment.
- Administer treatments as directed by the veterinarian and have the ability to administer medications intravenously, orally, and subcutaneously.
- Properly fill and dispense medications, pet foods, and supplies.
- Light reception duties include admitting patients, preparing estimates, answering telephone calls, scheduling, etc. Maintain and update patient files. Review patient vaccination records.
- Understand, recommend, and prepare vaccinations to be administered based on the patient's record and the hospital's vaccination protocols.
- Assist veterinarians in surgical procedures using proper aseptic techniques and monitor patients while undergoing surgical procedures.
- Perform feline and canine dental procedures including prophy/polish, Oravet application and perform dental x-rays.
- Monitor patient vitals while under general anesthesia and sedated procedures.
- Utilize, monitor, and perform minor maintenance of anesthesia equipment.
- Maintain and use IDEXX in-house laboratory equipment.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures and analysis in hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology - Prepare samples for outside laboratory analysis.
- Maintain pharmacy records, and controlled drug logs.
- Properly use a digital x-ray machine and place the patient in proper positions for radiographs.
- Complete ear cleanings and nail trims and express anal glands, along with minor grooming tasks
- Perform other duties as assigned
Other: Other duties include maintaining a clean and sanitary environment. Have the ability to lift 50lbs and be able to stand and be on feet for long periods of time. Must possess good critical thinking and problem-solving skills, be compassionate, have a positive attitude, good follow-through, and excellent communication and teamwork skills. Upon hiring, all new employees will be subject to a 90-day probationary period during which time employment may be terminated as determined by management.
Work Environment: Small animal hospital, work in front and back of the hospital, high level of client interaction, exposure to x-rays and anesthetic gases with proper protective measures. Potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases and possible hazardous materials.
