Your internship will include impactful hands-on work within a county department, networking, professional development, and building lasting connections with other interns, mentors, and Manatee County team members.
- Program Dates: The 2024 internship program will begin on May 19th, 2025, and end on August 8th, 2025.
- Internship Hours: Up to 27 hours/week (maximum), Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; may vary by department.
- Pay Range: $14 per hour up to $20 per hour (graduate/ master’s student), based on the number of credit hours earned.
- Maintains Emergency Operation database of Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) for the Utilities Departmental and/or Division Functions.
- Examines whether each section’s COOP has procedural steps that are executable.
- Include training for department employees to ensure each employee understands their role in the COOP.
- Work at different utility sections some of which include the Water Treatment Plant, Water Reclamation Facilities, Water/Wastewater Laboratories, the County Landfill, GIS Mapping and Records, and Utility Locate.
The Manatee County Utilities Department consists of four divisions: Business, Water, Wastewater, and Solid Waste. Each division provides the citizens and businesses of unincorporated Manatee County with a variety of services essential to daily living. The Utilities Department provides high-quality drinking water, sufficient water quantity for fire protection, collection, and treatment of wastewater to a reusable standard, and collection and processing of solid wastes of the community – all in compliance with multitudes of regulations and at an affordable cost.
As the Utilities Emergency Planning Intern, you will work with other county employees to develop emergency and disaster plans for the Utilities Department in compliance with department, County, State and Federal rules, regulations and policies.
Department Responsibilities:
- Update and log Utilities Department policy and procedures.
- Update and log Utilities Department Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) for each section.
- Meet with section supervisors to review suggested changes to COOPs.
- Prepare section critical needs and supply lists for an emergency activation.
- Share the findings, critical needs, supply list and other relevant information at a Utilities Department Leadership Teams meeting.
- Combine all Utilities Department section’s COOPs into one department plan with section branches.
Internship Program Responsibilities:
- A presentation to the County Administrator and other County Leadership staff is required at the close of the internship program.
- Participate in all organized intern events and trainings.

About You
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma, or equivalent (if applicable)
- Eligible to work in the United States – we love local, national, and international students!
- Currently seeking a diploma or degree through an accredited secondary or post-secondary educational program, or within 12 months after graduation.
