The Curriculum Development Assistant at Maritime Professional Training (MPT) assists in the design, development, and implementation of USCG-approved & UK MCA-approved training courses, focusing on creating engaging and effective instructional materials for adult learners.
Responsibilities
The person filling this role will be responsible for the following:
- Assists the curriculum department in the development of training courses to fulfill national and international requirements (including STCW and other conventions) of training and assessment for Deck and Engine personnel.
- Preparing course submissions for the United States Coast Guard National Maritime Center (NMC) review, as well as the Maritime Coastguard Agency of the United Kingdom & Northern Ireland (UKMCA) and other flag state reviews for approval or acceptance.
- Maintaining and updating current courses to ensure subject matter validity, regulatory compliance, and demonstrate best practices.
- Working with subject matter experts (SMEs) assigned to assist in the production of courses, for all matters as they pertain to course content and deliverables.
- Assisting the Academic Principal in ensuring that the MPT faculty are presenting the information to our students with the proper and effective methodology to promote the learning of the material and proficiency development as required.
Qualifications
- Applicants must be well versed and conversant in Microsoft Office and able to demonstrate a high level of proficiency.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in using educational technology and digital learning tools is increasingly important.
- Strong research skills are needed to stay up-to-date on adult learning and best practices.
- Not expected to be an SME but must be able to follow logic and flow in technical writing.
- Accurately proofreads course documents for grammatical and other errors, inconsistencies, and alignment with approval templates.
- Can draft and edit student manuals, lesson plans, and assessment plans in clear, structured English.
The ideal candidate is someone with the mind of a technical editor, the curiosity of a junior instructional designer, and the patience of a compliance officer—who also happens to be a great communicator and listener.

Starting annual salary range for this role is $40,000-$45,000.
