What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Planning Analyst position at Markel?
This role participates in a broad range of financial planning and analysis activities to provide valuable insights, solutions and services to our internal customers. These include, but are not limited to, financial modeling, the development and generation of insightful financial analyses, reporting, the annual budget/quarterly forecast process and ad hoc initiatives. This associate must be an analytical thinker with strong communication skills.
Additionally, this role will assist in mentoring and coaching new analysts.
Job Responsibilities
- Develops and maintains models and tools to support effective and efficient analysis and recommendations
- Provide decision support through value added analysis and financial insights & storytelling
- Analyzes and presents insights on competitor and industry analysis workflows
- Participates in identifying and leveraging new tools to improve data analysis
- Produce clear reports that summarize financial output, issues and recommendations
- Supports reporting needs of the broader organization to provide increased visibility of financial performance
- Documents, reviews and optimizes standard processes and process flows
- Supports the compilation and analysis of the annual budget and quarterly forecast
- Participate or lead ad hoc initiatives and orchestrate alignment and success across multifunction projects
- Work with multiple business partners to gain a deeper understanding of financial data, to confirm assumptions, and validate output of analyses
- Mentors and coaches other analysts
- Supports the organization in opportunity identification, data-based decision-making and performance assessment
- Reviews deliverables prepared by other team members
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in finance or a related discipline
- MBA or MBA pursuit a plus
- CPCU or other industry designation a plus
Work Experience & Skill Set
- 2-4 years of related experience or applicable internships
- Strong understanding of financial processes and systems
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Must have strong Excel and data manipulation skills
- Highly organized and detail-oriented with ability to multi-task
- Ability to deliver outstanding customer service
- Adaptable and comfortable with fast pace and shifting priorities
- Financial consulting and analysis skills - ability to assess needs, identify issues, recommend alternatives and implement change
