Assistant Principal – Marple Newtown High School
Classification: Administrative – Exempt
Reports to: Principal
Primary Function:
The Assistant Principal is responsible for assisting with the overall operation and management of the school—supporting students, staff, programs, and systems in alignment with district goals and in compliance with applicable laws and policies. The role requires strategic leadership, instructional expertise, operational oversight, and strong communication skills to support a safe, effective, and inclusive learning environment.

- Conducts classroom visits for the purpose of monitoring instructional programs and teacher effectiveness.
- Evaluates and provides feedback on staff performance to promote professional growth and accountability.
- Walks the school building and premise to monitor safety, policies and procedures, and interact with students and teachers.
- May serve as the administrator for the school’s interscholastic athletic programs and related activities.
- Attends and monitors extra-curricular school and/or district activities/events.
- Ensures effective communication between the school, other buildings, and central administration.
- Assists with personnel matters including recruitment, selection, assignment, transfer, promotion, and discipline of staff, as appropriate.
- Promotes and maintains a safe, respectful, and effective learning environment for all students and staff.
- Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the principal in alignment with the school’s mission and priorities.
- Long periods of time sitting at a desk using a computer.
- Long periods of time walking or standing on school premises.
- On premise attendance to facilitate meetings, interact with students, teachers, families, and colleagues.
Strategic and Cultural Leadership
- Supports the implementation of the district’s educational philosophy, goals, and policies in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.
- Participates in strategic planning for academic programming, resource allocation, and building needs.
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with students, staff, families, and the broader community to foster a positive and inclusive school culture.
- Encourages innovation in instructional practice based on research and emerging trends.
- Promotes a safe, respectful, and welcoming learning environment for all students and staff.
- Monitors the building and grounds to maintain visibility, engage with students and staff, and monitor safety and adherence to expectations.
Systems Leadership
- Assists in supervising, assigning, and evaluating certified and non-certified staff.
- Collaborates with central office staff on matters related to human resources, budget, and facilities.
- Oversees aspects of school operations including student records, scheduling, facility use, and security procedures.
- Supports the planning, implementation, and evaluation of extracurricular activities and events, including athletic programming as needed.
- Attends and monitors school-sponsored events to ensure alignment with school values and operational effectiveness.
- Assists in recruiting, selecting, and recommending staff placements, transfers, and disciplinary actions.
- Maintains accuracy and confidentiality of student and staff records in accordance with district policy and legal requirements.
- Ensures effective communication and coordination between the school, other district buildings, and central administration.
Leadership for Learning
- Provides instructional leadership with a focus on student learning and achievement.
- Conducts regular classroom visits to monitor instruction and provide actionable feedback to teachers.
- Evaluates and supports staff through observation cycles and reflective coaching practices.
- Facilitates the development and delivery of curriculum and instructional programming aligned to district standards.
- Promotes data-informed practices and supports staff in using assessment results to improve instruction.
- Supports the professional growth of faculty by fostering collaboration and encouraging continuous improvement.
- Plans and participates in school-level professional development aligned with instructional priorities and staff needs.
Professional and Community Leadership
- Communicates effectively with families, community partners, and district stakeholders to promote school goals and values.
- Represents the school at district meetings, parent events, and extracurricular functions.
- Collaborates with colleagues to support district initiatives and foster a culture of shared leadership.
- Serves as a role model of ethical leadership, professionalism, and student-centered decision-making.
- Maintains high standards of discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive matters involving staff, students, or families.
- Supports a collaborative and inclusive school culture by promoting equity and respect for all individuals.
- Responds to challenges with professionalism, sound judgment, and a solutions-oriented mindset.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Pennsylvania administrative certification
- Demonstrated knowledge of school operations, instructional leadership, and staff supervision
- Proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills and capacity to manage complex responsibilities with initiative and integrity
- Experience as a school building administrator preferred
Work Environment
- Work is performed primarily indoors in a climate-controlled office or school setting.
- Involves prolonged periods of sitting with intermittent walking and standing; occasional bending and reaching may be required.
- Regular use of hands for typing, writing, file handling, and operating office equipment.
- Requires visual and auditory acuity for reading, phone communication, and active supervision of students and staff.
- Involves working under time-sensitive conditions with frequent interruptions and high-stakes decision-making.
- Expected to attend and support extracurricular events, meetings, and other school functions beyond the regular school day.
