Marshall Farms’ Ferret Husbandry Technician is responsible for the daily care of a ferret colony throughout the breeding, whelping and growing process as well as assist with order requests and shipping. The husbandry technician must be knowledgeable of the production, treating, and vaccinating processes including documentation, management of medicines, ability to discern abnormal behaviors and health problems, knowledge of different transgenic lines, and administering proper support and treatment. Other duties include management of feed and bedding supplies, medications, and vaccine, as well as following specific biosecurity requirements.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Manage medical care of ferrets through observation, animal behavior knowledge, disease recognition, and morbidity assessment. Assess the condition of ferrets of all ages, triage and provide treatments, as needed. Administration of treatment requires knowledge and proper mixing/reconstitution as well as use of medications and record keeping.
- Provide supplemental feedings and dietary supplements (fluid support therapy, nutritional supplements).
- Identify ferrets that require treatments.
- Apply and accurately record traits and other pertinent information into ferret records.
- Care for medicine and utensils including routine cleaning, rotation/dating sanitizing and storage.
- Perform routine clean-up, including sweeping, mopping, washing sinks, countertops, carts, and break/locker areas.
- Communicate any health related, or production concerns to the following Area coordinator, Production management and/or the vet staff.
- Move animals and make pen changes, ensuring proper handling of ferrets.
- Administration of vaccines, requiring knowledge of proper dilution and reconstitution and documentation.
- Identify and MC ferrets.
- Orders/Shipping
- Must be able to understand customer orders.
- Must be able to properly select/ assign healthy ferrets for orders based on customer specifications (weight, age, sex).
- Accurately record information into ferret histories
- Must be able to understand and follow ferret crating guidelines
- Must be able to understand truck schedules and loading procedures.
Requirements
High School Diploma or GED. Prior animal experience with ferrets preferred.
Veterinary science background would be a plus.
This position is a grade N3 with a pay range of $17.74-26.61 per hour
Hours are Tues- Thur 7-3:30, Fri-Sat 5-1:30 (Note this may change to meet business needs once the employee is trained)
