Job Description :
The Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University invites applications for a Research Technician II to support skeletal growth and bone physiology research in the laboratory of Dr. Maria A. Serrat.
This is a 2-year position with possible extension pending satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
Specific duties will include managing and / or assisting with : time-sensitive mouse growth studies with careful attention to diet and environmental conditions; mouse colony and breeding management, including genotyping; prepare dyes, fluorescently-labeled proteins, and sterile injections; participate in mouse surgeries, injections, tissue harvest, dissection, and measurements; protein and RNA analyses of cartilage; bone tissue cultures; prepare paraffin histology slides and perform immunostaining; x-rays and CT scanning; acquire and analyze digital images; perform and troubleshoot experiments using simple to complex laboratory procedures by following and modifying protocols as appropriate; operate and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment; prepare reagents; supply ordering, documentation and budget management; supervise and / or oversee students and other junior team members; help ensure a safe laboratory environment in compliance with all regulatory guidelines; participate in data collection, analysis and graphic displays; assist in preparation of presentations, research manuscripts and grant proposals; perform literature reviews as appropriate and stay current in scientific developments in the field; participate in weekly lab meetings, project planning, and objective setting for the group.
Skills sought :
Mouse breeding and colony management including genotyping; molecular techniques including protein and RNA, cell or tissue culture; imaging using microscopy and / or fluorescence microscopy (preferably bone and cartilage); histology; mouse surgical and dissection skills; experience with image and data analysis software such as ImageJ and SPSS; experience supervising students; and effective protocol writing.

Salary Range

Education
- Candidates with a Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years laboratory experience involving animal handling, breeding colony management, molecular biology, cell or tissue culture, histology, microscopy, and data analysis.
