Martin County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is seeking a committed and passionate individual to serve as the Substance Misuse and Suicide Prevention Spanish Outreach and Opioid Prevention Coordinator. This role will be split between two key focus areas: 50% dedicated to building coalition capacity through conducting outreach and engagement within the Hispanic community and 50% dedicated to opioid prevention efforts, primarily targeting individuals aged 10-24 in Martin County. The ideal candidate will be bilingual in Spanish and English and possess a strong commitment to substance misuse prevention, opioid misuse education, and community outreach. Travel within the county will be required along with meeting and training opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

Spanish Outreach Substance Misuse and Suicide Prevention (50%):

  • Outreach and Engagement: Build relationships within the Hispanic community to raise awareness about substance abuse, mental health, and prevention resources, focusing on individuals aged 10-24.
  • Culturally Relevant Resource Development: Create and distribute Spanish-language educational materials related to substance misuse prevention, mental health, and available support services for youth and families.
  • Community Event Coordination and Evaluation: Organize and support culturally sensitive community events, workshops, and educational sessions that cater to the Hispanic community and address substance misuse prevention and evaluate them. Provide relevant information to coalition for grant reporting.
  • Translation and Interpretation: Provide translation and interpretation services to ensure clear communication and access to resources for Spanish-speaking community members.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with local organizations, the Empower Prevention Youth Group, and other stakeholders to align outreach efforts, share resources, and extend the reach of prevention programs. Meet weekly with other MCSAP project coordinators. Attend monthly meetings for the Stronger Together coalition.
  • Other: All other duties to be assigned.

Opioid Prevention Coordination (50%):

  • Outreach and Engagement: Lead efforts to educate the community, especially youth and their families, on the dangers of opioid misuse and overdose, focusing on harm reduction and prevention strategies.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Assist in gathering and analyzing data on opioid misuse, tracking program effectiveness, and identifying trends within the community to inform prevention strategies.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with healthcare providers, law enforcement, schools, and other community partners to enhance opioid prevention efforts and promote the safe use of prescription medications. Attend monthly meeting for MCSAP Coalition.
  • Naloxone Training and Distribution: Facilitate community-based naloxone (Narcan) training sessions and assist with the distribution of naloxone kits to at-risk populations.
  • Program Reporting: Evaluate and prepare reports on the impact of opioid prevention efforts, outreach activities, and progress toward reducing opioid misuse in the community.
  • Qualifications:
  • Bilingual: Fluent in both Spanish and English, with strong verbal and written communication skills in both languages.

  • Education and Experience: Experience in community outreach, public health, substance abuse prevention, or opioid prevention is preferred. A background working with Hispanic communities is highly desirable. Willingness to participate in job-related continuing education. Become a certified prevention professional within two years of hiring. Stay up-to-date on relevant resources. High School diploma is required. A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and project management skills to balance multiple tasks effectively. Reliable self-starter with excellent time management.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent ability to build relationships and engage diverse populations, including youth, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Opioid Knowledge: Familiarity with opioid prevention strategies, harm reduction approaches, and overdose response methods is preferred.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate community events and outreach activities.
  • Higher Level Thinking: Demonstrate problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Commitment: Demonstrate commitment to substance misuse and suicide prevention.
  • Technology Competent: Familiar with and able to use Microsoft Office products, Google Suite, able to communicate using social media and other relevant apps. Willing to learn simple activity-tracking software on Excel platform.
  • Mobility: Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Security: Successfully pass a background check.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $21.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
