Job Summary:

 

The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) will lead the development and implementation of the district's educational strategies, ensuring that all students receive high-quality instruction aligned with the district's mission to "Engage. Inspire. Prepare." The CAO will oversee curriculum development, instructional practices, assessment, and professional development to promote improved student achievement and continuous improvement.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Assessment and Accountability:

  • Oversee the development and administration of assessments to monitor student progress and inform instruction.
  • Continuously analyze student performance data to identify trends, set goals, and implement improvement plans.
  • Identify next steps related to strong core instruction, appropriate use of the school day on core instruction, interventions aligned to core instruction and methods to establish intervention impact. 

Professional Development:

  • Design and implement comprehensive professional development programs for instructional staff to enhance teaching effectiveness.
  • Design and implement, in collaboration with the Superintendent, professional development structures for school leaders that are focused on instructional ownership, versus technical and adaptive needs alone.
  • Stay current with educational research and best practices to inform teaching, learning, equity, belonging, and access initiatives.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Serve as a key member of the district's leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration among schools, departments, and the community to support student success.
  • Build systems that articulate well between school leadership and district office staff. 
  • Lead under the assumption that the district office is in service on school success, and the support and growth of school leadership.
  • Establish, train, and support a robust and authentic school improvement planning process that meaningfully results in improved academic outcomes for all students. 

Compliance and Reporting:

  • Responsible for all academic programs in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations., including LAP/Title/ML, etc. 
  • Prepare and present reports on academic performance and initiatives to the Superintendent, School Board, and other stakeholders. 

 Curriculum and Instruction:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate K-12 curriculum that meets state standards and address diverse student needs.
  • Collaborate with principals and teachers to promote effective instructional strategies and consistency across schools.
  • Strategize a cycle and method for curriculum adoption, implementation and professional development in an environment that has limited resources. 

Qualifications:

 

Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field required; Doctorate preferred; Superintendent Credential preferred.
  • Valid Washington State Administrative certificate or the ability to obtain a Washington State Administrator certificate; five years successful teaching experience and three years of administrative or leadership experience with responsibility for curriculum and/or categorical programs at the school or district level or equivalent combination  of education and experience.
  • Washington State driver’s license or evidence of mobility
  • Experience working with and/or training, with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity preferred
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • Completion of all district-required trainings within thirty (30) calendar days from hire date

  • Commitment to equity and inclusion in education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a diverse school district.
  • Familiarity with Washington State educational standards and assessments.

Evaluation:

 

This position shall be evaluated periodically by the Superintendent pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria.  The process shall include an evaluation of the employee’s performance of the above essential job functions
