Position Summary
The Inventory Accounting Director will be responsible for assisting in the accounting of Inventory and other general accounting functions as it relates to Mavis’ Operation Support Center (OSC) and Store level operations, including but not limited to the preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, physical counts, cycle counts, and other analysis. This individual will also provide strategic support and analysis as needed and oversee the review and instruction of junior staff.

The ideal candidate will have an analytical mindset, strong work ethic, heightened attention to detail, and a desire for continuous process improvement.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Be at least 18 years of age;
- Legally authorized to work in the United States;
- CPA or CPA track preferred
- Prior experience with inventory accounting
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- The ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment;
- Four year college degree in accounting or finance
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX)
- Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite (Especially Excel)
- Confident, Team-oriented, Trustworthy, Supportive
- Prior experience leading a team of at least 3 members
- Prior retail experience a plus
Essential Functions of the Position
1. Inventory Reconciliation
- Overall responsibility for the reconciliation of all inventory accounts for all companies.
- Acts as the subject matter expert for all aspects of inventory particularly as it relates to GAAP accounting.
- Responsibility for ensuring costing methodologies (FIFO based) are being consistently applied within the various inventory systems for each subsidiary.
- Conducts and oversees monthly cost testing to validate cost and research changes at the individual item level.
- Develops and maintains monthly inventory rollforwards and validates each component of the rollforward.
- Keeps a constant pulse on and acts as a gate keeper on manual adjustments posted to the inventory sub-ledgers by the supply chain teams and evaluates legitimacy in accordance with internal policies.
- Reconciles all inventory sub-ledgers to each company’s general ledger monthly.
- Produces monthly inventory flux and turn ratios and provides related commentary explaining movements and changes to management.
- Evaluates inventory shrinkage amongst the all Mavis inventory locations (2,000 locations) and helps direct investigations for anomalies.
- Develops and maintains all inventory related SOPs, Accounting Policies, Process Maps and SOX controls.
- Integrates acquisition companies into the Mavis close process and works to integrate and standardize all subsidiaries inventory processes, procedures, systems, personnel and technologies wherever possible.
- As acquisitions are consummated the role will be responsible for meeting with target company counterparts to evaluate current state end to end processes and adjust where necessary to comply to Mavis inventory policies.
- Evaluates monthly inventory provision / reserve for shrinkage and obsolescence.
- Engages with external and internal auditors on all matters of inventory including providing documentation, process maps and controls for quarterly and annual audits.
- Developing KPI reporting for all aspects of inventory including shrinkage by company, by store and by item.
2. Physical Inventory
- Oversee the coordination of the physical inventories of our 2000 locations.
- Track and communicate inventory discrepancies and analyze trends in inventory deviations.
- Supervise a staff of 4 individuals performing audits of the inventories.
- Work directly with the regional leadership teams on the investigation of significant variances and trends
- Monitor cycle counts at all of the warehouses to identify systematic issues within the process.
3. SOX
- Support implementation and compliance with SOX key controls related to inventory (this includes oversight of inventory valuation and reserves, inventory adjustments, full Physical inventory counts, Cycle Counts, and any necessary entries or accruals resulting from the process)
- Coordinate with internal and external auditors related to inventory accounts and processes ensuring complete, timely, and accurate responses to information requests.
- Continuously evaluate SOX controls in light of changing systems/processes and work with Internal Audit to identify and implement necessary control changes.
4. Annual Audit and Quarterly Reviews
- Support information flow between accounting teams, external auditors, and other internal and external partners especially in support of the valuation of company inventory
- Prepare balance sheet and income statement fluctuation analyses relating to inventory and COGS and be able to speak knowledgably on all material inventory matters.
