DPW Community Aide - Solid Waste Worker/Laborer (Hire Up Referrals Only): POSTING DATE: 04/15/2024 CLOSING DATE: 07/15/2024 12:00 MIDNIGHT Hire Up Overview: Hire Up is a transitional jobs program for adult Baltimore City residents who are unemployed or underemployed. Program participants will receive a job at a city agency, business, or organization for up to 6 months that pays $16 per hour for at least 35 hours per week. Participants also receive free career navigation, legal services, financial empowerment counseling, and job placement assistance. DPW Position Overview: Community Aide - Solid Waste Worker Salary: $16.00 Per hour Term: Temporary – 6 months, with the potential to be hired permanently. Throughout the 6-month temporary employment, candidates with be evaluated by their supervisors to determine if a recommendation will be made for permanent employment. Throughout the 6-month temporary employment, candidates should be reviewing and applying to open positions listed on the DPW website. Please note this is temporary position with no benefits, the term of employment will not extend beyond 6 months. If permanent employment is not sought, applied to, or, if there are no vacancies at the end of the 6-month period, employment shall be terminated. Temporary Solid Waste Worker (Community Aide): Class Definition A Solid Waste Worker lifts and dumps trash into load packers or trucks. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed outdoors on the back of load packers and usually in residential neighborhoods where there is exposure to elements of hazardous waste, inclement weather, bee stings, animal bites, sharp materials protruding from trash and moving vehicle hazards. Work requires lifting heavy objects such as 20 – gallon cans of mixed refuse and stretching. Typical Examples of Work: (The following examples illustrate the work performed in the positions in the class. Position may require some or all these examples depending on the organization of work within the agency. This Is not inclusive. A position may require related duties not listed, if necessary to accomplish the work of the agency. Lifts and empties 20-gallon cans of mixed refuse, plastic bags of trash and corner litter baskets into either load packers or trucks. Returns containers to proper place and walks behind load packers. Sweeps streets. Performs related work as required. Required Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to lift moderately heavy bulk items. Ability to bend and stretch.
