About the Position

The Seminary seeks a Vice President for Institutional Advancement, an innovative and dynamic leader who will partner with incoming President, Dr. Maisha I. Handy, staff, alumni / ae, and the broader community to advance its mission and core values. This position reports directly to Dr. Handy and offers an extraordinary opportunity to shape the Seminarys philanthropic strategy, build partnerships, and lead impactful fundraising efforts in support of McCormicks inclusive programs.

Position Overview

The Vice President for Institutional Advancement will :

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive advancement strategy aligned with McCormicks mission and core values.
  • Work collaboratively with the Vice President for Community Engagement and Alumni Relations to cultivate and steward relationships with alumni / ae, donors, and institutional partners to strengthen engagement and philanthropy.
  • Build and oversee a small Advancement team, fostering a culture of collaboration, excellence, and innovation.
  • Prepare for a future campaign effort while managing the current annual fund program, which aims to grow annually from $600,000 to $1 million in unrestricted giving.
  • Collaborate with the President, Board of Trustees, and faculty to build a culture of philanthropy while identifying and pursuing major gifts, planned giving opportunities, and long-term fundraising goals.
  • Lead efforts to promote McCormicks seven core values, emphasizing its commitment to transformational learning, diversity, and justice.
  • Provide regular updates to the President and Board of Trustees, ensuring transparency and accountability in advancement efforts.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for McCormicks advancement program, including annual giving, major and planned gifts, alumni relations, and foundation and corporate support.
  • Lead and mentor the Advancement team, fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture.
  • Collaborate closely with the Vice President for Community Engagement and Alumni Relations to create seamless relationship management and engagement strategies.
  • Work alongside the McCormick executive team to provide leadership of the institution. In addition to President Handy, the leadership team includes the Chief Financial Officer, Vice President of Community Engagement and Alumni Relations, and the Academic Dean.
  • Develop and execute innovative fundraising strategies that expand beyond traditional theological education funding sources, including partnerships with scientific, artistic, and academic communities.
  • Develop and implement fundraising plans to meet ambitious financial goals and expand the Seminarys donor base.
  • Lead pursuit of major foundation opportunities, including new collaborative grant programs like the Lilly Endowment initiative, while maintaining focus on diversifying funding sources beyond foundation support.
  • Drive increased board giving participation while helping board members leverage their networks for institutional advancement.
  • Build and steward relationships with alumni / ae, donors, congregations, and community partners.
  • Partner with the President, Board of Trustees, and faculty to identify and articulate funding priorities.
  • Report regularly on progress and outcomes of advancement activities to the President and Board of Trustees.
  • Integrate data-driven strategies and emerging best practices to enhance fundraising effectiveness.
  • Represent McCormick as a key ambassador, promoting its mission and values to external audiences.
  • Characteristics of a Successful Candidate

    The ideal candidate will bring :

  • A proven track record of fundraising success, including major gift cultivation and donor stewardship.
  • The ability to articulate and embody McCormicks mission and values, inspiring support for its vision.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on relationship-building and collaboration.
  • An understanding of and appreciation for McCormicks Reformed heritage and ecumenical commitments.
  • The ability and willingness to communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Knowledge of fundraising tools and best practices, with the ability to innovate in a changing landscape.
  • Qualifications and Requirements

  • A passion or interest in theological education and academia
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of nonprofit fundraising experience
  • A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree is preferred
  • Experience managing a small fundraising team
  • Experience using Raisers Edge
  • Campaign experience is preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of the financial budgeting process

    Salary and Benefits

    McCormick Theological Seminary offers a competitive salary range of $145,000 to $155,000 and a

    comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, and generous vacation and professional development opportunities.
