Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller to join our finance team. The Controller oversees the financial operations of several small businesses, ensuring accurate accounting, timely reporting, and compliance with regulations. This role manages the day-to-day activities of the accounting, payroll and HR team, prepares financial statements, and supports the business owner or leadership with insights into financial performance. The Controller plays a key role in maintaining the company’s financial integrity and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (e.g., balance sheets, profit and loss statements).
- Manage payroll processing, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable tax laws.
- Monitor and maintain internal controls to protect company assets and ensure accurate reporting.
- Develop and track budgets in collaboration with leadership, providing variance analysis as needed.
- Ensure timely tax filings and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Supervise a small accounting, payroll and HR team, delegating tasks and ensuring quality of work.
- Assist in cash flow monitoring and forecasting to support operational needs.
- Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, or tax professionals during audits or reviews.
- Provide financial data and reports to support decision-making by the owner or leadership team.
- Assist in risk management and insurance matters.
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA or equivalent certification is a plus).
- 3-5 years of accounting or financial management experience, preferably in a small business environment.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), financial reporting, payroll and human resources.
- Proficiency in accounting software: QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
- Good communication skills to interact with team members, leadership, and external partners.
