Position Overview:
The Exercise Physiologist in the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department is responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring personalized exercise programs for patients recovering from cardiac and pulmonary conditions. This role involves collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to promote patient safety, optimize functional capacity, and enhance overall quality of life. The position is a 20 hours/week role, with scheduled workdays on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care:
- Conduct initial assessments, including exercise testing, patient history, and risk stratification, to develop individualized exercise prescriptions.
- Monitor patients during exercise sessions, evaluating vital signs, oxygen saturation, and cardiac responses to ensure safety.
- Provide patient education on lifestyle changes, including exercise, nutrition, stress management, and smoking cessation.
Program Development and Implementation:
- Develop evidence-based exercise plans tailored to the needs and limitations of patients with cardiac and pulmonary conditions.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other team members to coordinate comprehensive rehabilitation plans.
- Adapt exercise prescriptions based on patients’ progress, tolerance, and clinical feedback.
Safety and Compliance:
- Maintain compliance with safety protocols, accreditation standards, and regulatory guidelines.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies during sessions, including administering CPR or using an AED when necessary.
- Document patient progress, incidents, and outcomes in the electronic medical record system in a timely and accurate manner.
Education and Advocacy:
- Facilitate educational sessions for patients and caregivers on the importance of physical activity and its role in managing chronic conditions.
- Support community outreach programs promoting cardiopulmonary health.
Operational Support:
- Assist in maintaining equipment, ensuring proper calibration, cleanliness, and functionality.
- Participate in team meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and program development efforts.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
- Certifications:
- Certification as an Exercise Physiologist (CEP) through ACSM or equivalent organization preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required (or obtained at new hire).
- Experience:
- Prior experience in cardiac and/or pulmonary rehabilitation preferred.
- Familiarity with exercise testing and prescription for chronic disease populations.
- Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to foster trust and motivate patients.
- Ability to manage multiple patients in a clinical setting, demonstrating attention to detail and safety.
Work Schedule:
- Days: 2 (Monday, Wednesday, or Friday)
