Position Description

This position Transportation Assistant Director will serve as the department’s primary project manager for multiple city-wide Choose How You Move (CHYM) initiatives and will oversee all aspects of the program. The candidate will work closely with the Mayor’s Office to ensure CHYM goals, timelines, and deliverables and in alignment with the administration’s vision. They will also keep key stakeholders in the public and private sector abreast of CHYM project details. Strong leadership and communication skills are a must for success in this position. Duties will also include the day-to-day management of a team that will be solely responsible for addressing all CHYM matters and providing solutions. The position will report to the NDOT Director and will work closely with We Go and other Metro agencies that will are involved with the CHYM program. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike / sidewalk lanes and much more. Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.

Typical Duties

Manages and oversees all aspects of the day-to-day operation related to the CHYM program.

Coordinates with the NDOT Director on planning and developing long term and short-term strategies for CHYM.

Develops and implement a comprehensive strategy for the CHYM program, ensuring alignment with NDOT’s vision, mission, and goals.

Oversees the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of CHYM transportation and infrastructure projects.

Ensures projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet quality and safety standards.

Develops performance metrics to track and report project progress and outcomes.

Oversees the development and management of project budgets.

Conducts studies and recommends improvements on engineering processes and procedures.

Serves as the primary liaison between NDOT and external stakeholders, including other government agencies, community organizations, consultants, and contractors.

Represents NDOT in public meetings, forums, and interdepartmental coordination efforts.

Attends Metro Council meetings, Budget meetings, Council Committee meetings and other relevant meetings concerning CHYM activities at NDOT.

Meets with and responds to the media concerning the CHYM program.

Develops departmental policies, procedures, rules, regulations in conjunction with CHYM.

Consults with private engineering firms and monitors their work on CHYM projects.

Performs supervisory duties.

Evaluates staff procedures on a continuous basis; recommends and implements improvements where necessary Administers personnel policies.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Public Administration, Planning or a related technical field AND eight (8) years professional experience in an administrative, engineering, technical, project management, infrastructure, transit or related field, including five (5) years of management experience.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Master's degree in engineering, Public Administration, Planning or related field
