The Medical Records Clerk is responsible for maintaining and organizing patient medical records in compliance with legal, ethical, and institutional standards. This role involves ensuring the accuracy, confidentiality, and accessibility of patient information, as well as assisting healthcare professionals with record-related inquiries.
**Key Responsibilities: **
- Accurately compile, audit, and maintain patient medical records, both electronic and paper-based, to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Process patient records and updating records accordingly.
- Retrieve, file, and organize documents in accordance with health information management policies.
- Ensure all medical records are complete, accurate, and up to date, identifying any discrepancies or missing information.
- Assist healthcare providers in accessing patient records for treatment, billing, and legal purposes.
- Handle requests for medical records from patients and third-party entities in line with applicable privacy laws.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of medical terminology and healthcare regulations.
- Collaborate with other departments to improve record-keeping processes and resolve record-related issues.
- Participate in ongoing training and development related to medical records management and health information technology.
- Answering patient, facilities, and third-party entities calls regarding medical records requests.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree in health information management or related field preferred.
- Prior experience in medical records, health information management, or a similar role is a plus.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations (HIPAA).
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Experienced in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and skilled in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, maintaining professionalism at all times.
- Typical office environment in a healthcare setting.
- May require extended periods of sitting and using computer systems.
- Occasional lifting of files and documents, as needed.
