JOB SUMMARY:

 

Miami Country Day School strives every year to ensure the success of their summer programs. This is where you come in. Specialty counselors will provide a specific activity or class each day for the duration of camp. Specialty activities offered include. Arts, Crafts, Music, Drama, Canal Activities, Archery, Outdoor Courts, Field Activities, Dance, Ceramics, Game Room, DJing, Science, Yoga, Pedal Karts and more. As the lead in these activity areas, each specialist makes sure campers have a safe and fun time.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Active participation in and support of Camp activities including, but not limited to:

 

  • Participation in the theme of each week, including dress up days and preparing theme-related activities for all age groups attending specific specialty activities. 
  • Plans and executes fun, educational, and age-appropriate activities for the members of each cabin. 
  • Ensures every safety measure is taken prior to starting your activities.   
  • Maintains the inventory of all equipment and supplies for your specialty group.
  • Stay in communication with the camp director to assist where needed when do not have a class scheduled. 
  • Maintains a controlled environment to ensure the campers are safe and well behaved.
  • Provides supportive leadership for the MCDS Summer Auxiliary Program Staff.

 

Daily Camp Operations and Safety & Well-Being of Campers:

 

  • Report at 8:00 am daily for morning meetings, equipment setup & preparation for instruction.
  • Communicate any injuries of campers or staff to the school nurse, camp director and Camp Office.
  • Report to designated break areas ONLY when you are on your break. DO NOT take breaks in group cabins or other camp specialty group activities unless instructed to do so by the Camp Director.
  • Report any items of concern to the camp director.
  • Ensure that you are on time for ALL your scheduled classes. 

Allocate specific duties to cabin counselors when their group is present

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College degree preferred.
  • 3 years of camp experience/activity leadership – comprised of experience as a camper or a CIT, minimum 1 year experience as a Camp Counselor
  • 3 years’ experience in activities – program creation, execution, and hosting
  • Must work well with varying age groups of children. 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Enjoys being in the company of children.
  • Excellent leadership skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Must be punctual.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Additional language skill is a bonus.
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Able to work with multiple age-groups and in different environments (indoor, outdoor)
  • Must have an ability to display patience and care for every child, no matter the situation. 
  • Mediation skills
  • While performing this role, this employee may be required to lift up to 50 lbs, move around with full use of limbs and use all five senses to complete his/her responsibilities.
  • May work long hours for extended periods of time. 
  • Works in varied and extreme weather conditions, including extreme heat.
  • Contract terms:
  • Start Date: Monday June 9, 2025.
    • 7 consecutive weeks of camp from June 9 - July 25
    • June 9-14: Staff Training (Mandatory)
    • No Camp: June 19 and July 4
  • Camp work hours: 
  • Monday – Friday = Full camp days 8:00 am – 4:10 pm *hours may be scheduled on an as-needed basis, pending program activities/needs, with at least one 30-minute break daily.
  • Expected 35 hours/week unless otherwise agreed upon with Camp Director.
  • Uniform is required daily (except when noted as otherwise) – including camp shirt, Khaki shorts, watch, sneakers and, of course, a fun, positive attitude, and smile.
  • Use of tobacco, drugs and/or alcohol during employment is prohibited.
  • Personal use of technology (including smartphones, tablets, personal computers) is not permitted during camp hours (unless on a personal break, away from campers).

 

Compensation:

  • Hourly rate of $17.00/hour
  • Complimentary lunch meal, snacks, and staff shirts.
