Job Summary:
Mid-America Science Museum is seeking an engaging and extroverted individual who has a desire to entertain and educate people of all ages with fun science-based presentation through an infectious enthusiasm and strong charisma to join our team of part-time Museum Associates. Our goal is to create wonderful experiences for our guests through informal learning techniques to facilitate exhibits and premium customer service. Our guests and Education Department come from varied backgrounds to create an inclusive and dynamic environment. We are passionate about bringing STEM to students through summer camps, outreaches, field trips, and events. Museum Associates operate the Tesla Coil and Digital Dome to perform daily science shows to groups of 100 students, help in summer camps with 30 campers, assist guests in large museum-wide events, and admission and museum store sales.
Description of Duties:
- Provide museum floor coverage as scheduled while assisting visitors with exhibits on museum floor by facilitation and performing floor demonstrations daily in a friendly, outgoing manner.
- Provide excellent customer service to all museum visitors.
- Directly responsible for admissions, museum store sales, and answering phone calls in a friendly, outgoing manner.
- Responsible for daily cash of the registers.
- Use inquiry and other informal learning techniques to plan and facilitate age-appropriate science activities.
- Operate and perform Tesla Coil and Digital Dome shows.
- Ensure the museum floor is presentable and clean. Clean classrooms, materials, and equipment. Help maintain organization of education storage areas.
- Present classes and demonstrations in the museum and at outreach venues as assigned.
- Assist in museum summer camps (15 campers per room) as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
(This position is scheduled to work in either the Guest Services Dept or Education Dept per shift & is cross-trained for both departments. This doesn't mean that this person will be doing all of the above in one day.)
Requirements and Special Skills and Abilities:
- Must enjoy interacting with children.
- Must be able to work in conditions that can be overstimulating (loud, crowded, busy) while maintaining focus and excellent customer service and a calm demeanor under pressure.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Work a flexible schedule occasionally unsupervised.
- Must be available for evening and weekend work hours and work proportionately part of that time with other members of the department.
- All museum employees are hired into a 90 introductory period and receive a performance review before continuing to full employment.
- Be able to lift 30 lbs.
- Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
