What are the responsibilities and job description for the Foundry Lab Technician position at Mid-City Foundry Company?
Summary: Under the supervision of the Staff Metallurgist/Quality Engineer, the Lab Technician is responsible for performing various metallurgical tests to ensure all iron produced meets internal and external requirements. The Lab Tech shall also perform various sand tests to ensure key properties are maintained.
Education/Equivalent:
- Education equivalent to a high school diploma or trade school is preferred.
Work Experience Needed:
- 1-2 years of previous experience working as a Lab Technician in a manufacturing setting preferred.
Knowledge/Special Skills/Abilities Needed:
- Must possess basic mathematic skills.
- Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and in written form.
- Must be able to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
- Must be able to conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
- Must be able to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense
Nature & Scope-Principal Areas of Responsibilities:

- Operate the Spectro machine to analyze samples
- Collect and perform sand test as required
- Calculate alloy additions for the melt department
- Retrieve, brinell, heat treated test bars (if needed)
- Create packing slip for test bars to go to outside lab (if needed)
- Run preliminary and final chemistry on spectrometer.
- Clean spectrometer/maintain spectrometer on a defined schedule.
- Calculate chemistry adjustments as indicated on preliminary analysis.
- Communicate alloy additions as needed to Melt department (written and verbal).
- Monitor metal temperature.
- Obtain final carbon pins and ductile iron micro lugs off of pouring deck and package pins and micro lugs for analysis at the Milwaukee plant.
- Back-up Spectro data daily on the computer
- Report any unsafe working conditions and/or accidents promptly to the Quality Control Supervisor.
- Maintain cleanliness of the lab
