Art Storage Technician
Full-time (37.5 hours weekly), non-exempt, union
Hourly rate: $30.30 – $30.96
Onsite; not eligible for relocation
The Job
Assists the Collections Manager in moving works of art safely and efficiently within the museum; assists with processing newly-acquired works of art; retrieves and re-houses works of art in art storage areas; keeps accurate location records; updates digital records in the collection management database; inventories and catalogs works of art; maintains the cleanliness of art storage spaces, and assists with pest management using freezing and anoxia.
In this role, you will…
1. Move works of art within the museum ensuring that the objects are cared for and housed according to museum best practices; construct storage mounts when required.
2. Assist with the processing of new acquisitions (coordinate photography, physically number, and move objects into storage).
3. Retrieve and re-house works of art in storage before and after gallery installations; catalog and complete condition reports as required.
4. Keep accurate location change records manually and electronically in the museum’s collection management database, TMS (The Museum System). Create and update object database records in TMS.
5. Inventory and catalog (describe, measure, and record condition of) works of art. Physically examine works of art for stability, degradation, or damage. Verify physical numbering on works of art, or label and tag works of art.
6. Maintain organization and cleanliness of art storage areas.
7. Assist in the treatment of works of art for pest management using freezing and anoxia in coordination with the Collections Maintenance Technician.
8. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned, including assisting the Collections Maintenance Technician with gallery cleaning and maintenance.
Requirements:
- B.A. in Art History, Museum Studies, Studio Arts, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Prior museum Registration or comparable professional experience; two years minimum
- Familiar with a wide variety of fine art media and the associated terminology
- Experience examining works of art for condition reports according to current industry best practices
- Knowledge of best practices for handling and caring for works of art
- Must be willing to follow specific directions and pay close attention to details
- Experience using museum collection management software, such as Past Perfect, Argus, or TMS, is strongly preferred
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift to 25 pounds, climb ladders, walk, and stand for prolonged periods of time
- Stand or walk up to 2 hours at one time for 8 hours per day
- Sit for less than 2 hours at one time
- Lift or carry up to 25 pounds occasionally in a range of motions from floor to overhead
- Frequently use hands for simple grasping or pushing or pulling
- Occasionally squat, kneel, climb, reach overhead, lift overhead, knee stand, push or pull with forces up to 25 pounds
- Frequently bend
- Possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance
