Mississippi Votes (MS Votes) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of intergenerational synergy centering and led by young people invested in the progression of Mississippi. We do this through our programming and outreach strategy that empowers young people, encourages civic engagement, and educates communities on voting rights through place-based, grassroots organizing. Our vision is to cultivate a transformative culture of civic engagement throughout the state of Mississippi.


Overview:

The Human Resources (HR) Manager will lead all HR functions at Mississippi Votes, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws while fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture. The HR Manager will oversee recruitment, employee relations, benefits administration, performance management, and the development of HR policies and procedures. They will manage and collaborate with Legacy HR Consultants to implement and streamline HR operations, supporting the organization's strategic goals.

The HR Manager reports directly to the Operations & Finance Director and manages the HR Consultants at Legacy HR.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Human Resources Leadership:
      • Manage the day-to-day HR operations and serve as the primary point of contact for all HR-related matters.
      • Collaborate with the Operations & Finance Director to align HR strategies with organizational goals.
      • Serve as a liaison between MS Votes and external HR consultants at Legacy HR to optimize HR services.
  • Talent Acquisition & Management:
      • Lead the recruitment process, including job postings, interviews, and onboarding.
      • Develop and maintain an inclusive recruitment strategy to attract diverse talent.
      • Oversee employee lifecycle management, including promotions, transfers, and exits.
  • Employee Relations:
      • Foster a positive work environment that reflects MS Votes' values of equity, inclusion, and collaboration.
      • Handle employee grievances, conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions with professionalism and confidentiality.
      • Provide coaching and support to managers on effective leadership, employee engagement, and team dynamics.
  • Policy Development & Compliance:
      • Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies and procedures in line with best practices and legal requirements.
      • Ensure compliance with labor laws, workplace safety regulations, and organizational policies.
      • Maintain and update the employee handbook to reflect any changes in laws or internal policies.
  • Benefits Administration:
      • Manage the organization’s benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, and leave policies.
      • Coordinate benefits enrollment and ensure timely communication of changes to employees.
      • Serve as liaison between HR and accounting to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing.
  • Performance Management:
      • Oversee the performance review process, ensuring fair evaluations and fostering employee development.
      • Work with department heads to set clear expectations and provide regular feedback to employees.
      • Identify training and development opportunities to enhance employee skills and performance.
  • HR Systems & Reporting:
      • Manage and maintain HR systems, including BambooHR, to ensure accurate employee records and reporting.
      • Prepare and present HR reports on workforce metrics, including turnover rates, hiring, and diversity data.
  • Consultant Management:
    • Directly manage and coordinate the work of HR consultants from Legacy HR, ensuring they meet project deadlines and objectives.
    • Provide feedback and collaborate with consultants to implement effective HR solutions.



Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of HR experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven experience with HR compliance, employee relations, and performance management.
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal labor laws, HR best practices, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) strategies.
  • Proficiency in HR software (BambooHR preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience working with external HR consultants
  • SHRM-CP or PHR certification
  • Experience in non-profit organizations
  • Knowledge of Mississippi-specific labor regulations

Need to Have

  • Exceptional organizational and project management abilities, and ideally experience with Asana.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills for a wide variety of stakeholders, including but not limited to: staff, board, and partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strategic partnerships.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects



Position Details:

  • Salary: $80,000
  • MS Votes offers a competitive benefits package covering 50% of employee medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums, and 100% of mental healthcare costs.
  • Location: Jackson, MS
