- Responds to requests for information relating to exterior fire hazards from the public and District staff.
- Inspects property for weed and combustible materials that may constitute a fire hazard and writes correspondence setting forth violations and conditions for abatement.
- Enforce fire prevention regulations, including exterior hazard and general fire hazard notices.
- Participate in fire prevention projects such as fuels reduction.
- Operate a brush chipper, hand and power tools, and other equipment as necessary.
- Analyze structure ignition potential in the wildland/urban interface using a science based approach.
- Make mitigation recommendations based on wildland fire behavior.
- Accurately assess the potential for structure ignitions in wildland/urban interface fire.
- Implement fuel modification plans in order to reduce wildland/urban interface hazards.
- Recommend appropriate mitigation measures and strategies for the wildland/urban interface.
- Assist with presentations on wildland/urban interface and wildland fire issues.
- Attend, on occasion, a variety of continuing education classes, seminars, and/or meetings; remain current on applicable codes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Perform routine safety evaluations & inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances; identify fire hazards; recommend corrective actions; perform follow-up inspections to see confirm corrective actions have been taken.
- Investigate public and referred public agency complaints which involve District attention and resolution of issues.
- Understand how fuel, terrain, and weather influence wildland fire behavior and how structures ignite in the wildland/urban interface and be able to clear communicate this to residence.
- Know and understand techniques pertinent to tree thinning, brush removal, pruning, grazing, mowing, prescribed fire, and chemical treatments.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with stakeholders to ensure that assigned fire prevention coordination efforts are successful.
- Collect information in a specific format, generate written or audio-visual materials, recognize and use powerful images, and identify and organize outreach to affected audiences and the community at large.
- Prepare presentations, attend meetings, and motivate partners to achieve goals.
- Perform light cleaning of the administrative offices, maintenance of grounds and equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Possession of a High School diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school equivalency certificate is required, some college preferred.
- Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
- Fire prevention and safety inspection experience.
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License. Maintenance of a valid California Driver's License.
- Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Safety guidelines and appropriate safety procedures.
- Communicate effectively and articulately, both orally and in writing.
- Follow oral and written instruction.
- Drive safely and skillfully a class C truck.
- Interact with the public in a manner that is professional and respectful.
- Perform administrative and clerical duties accurately.
- Operate a brush chipper and use common hand and power tools.
- Exercise mechanical aptitude.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Work independently.
Environmental Conditions:
Outside environment; exposure to noise and heavy equipment; work in inclement weather conditions; exposure to hazardous materials.
Physical Conditions:
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking, carrying, stacking, piling, bending, climbing, overhead reaching, crouching; heavy pulling and pushing; strength to lift up to 50 pounds.The most qualified candidates will be selected to appear before a panel for an oral interview.
