What are the responsibilities and job description for the ESL Instructor - Refugee School Impact Grant (Full Time) position at Multicultural Community Resource Center?
MCRC is seeking a passionate ESL Instructor to support newly arrived refugee and asylee middle and high school students as they adapt to the Pennsylvania school system. This position plays a vital role in helping students build English proficiency, prepare for graduation or the GED, and navigate American culture in a supportive and engaging environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to middle and high school students from diverse backgrounds.
- Implement the current curriculum, develop lesson plans, and assess student progress through tests and assignments.
- Prepare students for Pennsylvania standardized tests, citizenship exams, and pre-employment processes.
- Maintain and update student academic records.
- Ensure that all instruction is conducted in English in an immersive environment to enhance language acquisition.
- Integrate an arts-focused approach into the afterschool program to engage students in a way that separates it from the traditional school day.
- Lead arts-related field trips, including visits to the Erie Art Museum, the Barber Institute annual art exhibit, the historic Warner Theatre, a ceramics studio, and live music performances.
- Help students build vocabulary related to the arts, self-expression, and teamwork through hands-on, project-based learning experiences.
- Organize a student art exhibition, providing a platform for students to showcase their work and allowing families to engage with the program.
- Uphold Pennsylvania educational standards in all instruction and program activities.
- Serve as the primary classroom instructor for all daily lessons and activities.
- Provide transportation for students to and from the program and their homes using MCRC vehicles.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Preferred: Experience teaching middle or high school students, particularly in ESL or a related field.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to transport students safely using MCRC vehicles.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to create an engaging, supportive classroom environment.
- Passion for working with refugee and asylee youth, supporting their cultural and educational transition.
- Ability to integrate creative, hands-on learning into instruction.
- Willingness to organize and participate in field trips and cultural experiences.
