As an Asphalt Quality Control Technician, you are responsible for testing and inspecting Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to ensure compliance with applicable specifications and standards. Your role is crucial in guaranteeing the quality and durability of asphalt pavements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Sampling and Testing:
- Perform daily sampling and testing of asphalt mixtures.
- Conduct tests for aggregate gradation, asphalt binder content, moisture content, and specific gravity.
- Utilize testing equipment such as gyratory compactors, ignition ovens, and sieves.
2. Data Recording and Analysis:
- Record test results accurately and maintain organized documentation for reference and reporting.
- Analyze data to identify trends or deviations from quality standards.
- Prepare reports summarizing testing outcomes and quality control measures.
3. Quality Assurance:
- Assist in developing and implementing quality control protocols and procedures.
- Ensure all asphalt products meet or exceed specifications before they are dispatched to construction sites.
- Work closely with production teams to adjust production processes based on QC findings.
4. Equipment Calibration and Maintenance:
- Regularly calibrate testing equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot issues with laboratory equipment.
5. Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure compliance with safety standards in the laboratory and on-site.
- Stay updated with the latest industry standards and testing methods.
- Participate in training and certification programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
6.Communication:
- Communicate test results and quality issues effectively to management and production teams.
- Coordinate with construction crews to provide technical support and guidance on asphalt laying techniques and quality assurance documentation.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to safely lift and handle material samples weighing 60 lbs. on a regular basis.
- Proficient in Windows-based database programs and MS Office products.
- Math skills including basic statistics and estimating.
- Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
- Ability to maintain an effective working relationship within a team environment. Ability to communicate effectively in stressful situations.
- Demonstrate attention to detail.
- Exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.
- Work well under pressure, independently, and in a team.
- Collaborate effectively with various departmental managerial staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent; further education in civil engineering or a related field is a plus.
- Previous experience in asphalt testing and quality control is preferred.
- Proficiency in using laboratory testing equipment and interpreting results.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- If hired with no experience or HMA, AT, BT Certifications. Employer will require Employee to take certifications after 90 days. Employer will assume cost of testing/travel.
Certification from relevant authorities or associations in asphalt quality control is advantageous.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- The role involves both laboratory, asphalt plants, and field work.
- Exposure to construction sites and outdoor conditions. This includes working in temperature extremes due to weather conditions and operating equipment.
- Exposure to Dust.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and lift heavy objects for extended periods.
- All candidates agree to complete a selection assessment.
