What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recovery Support Specialist - The Loft position at NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)?
The purpose of The Loft is to provide programming that offers emotional and mental health education and support for teens (grades 7-12) and their families. Designed to engage teens in their mental health journey, and to encourage teen voice in collaborative problem solving and family support, the design and implementation of the program covers a broad spectrum.
This program is in partnership with Pillars Community Health, working collaboratively in an interprofessional approach in Brookfield. The Loft is open every day of the week from 12-8 PM and weekends from 10 AM-6 PM. Therefore evenings, weekends, and some holidays are required. Additionally, there may be required trainings or meetings outside of work hours.
This is a part time position with the following hours:
- Saturday 10 AM-6 PM
- Sunday 10 AM-6 PM
- Monday 3-8 PM
- Wednesday 3-8 PM
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Effectively Deliver Services to Youth:
- Approach youth interactions from a non-judgmental standpoint, utilizing aspects of the following evidence-based models: strength based and person-centered approach, trauma informed care, motivational interviewing.
- Utilize recovery tools to assist youth in building a strong foundation in their recovery, while tracking progress and celebrating success.
- Collaborate with youth to create Safety Plans as needed.
- Coordinate with other members of youth support team and family as needed.
- Provide youth with resources and referrals to relevant services.
- Acknowledges own lived experience and shares parts of recovery story as appropriate and relevant.
- Model and teach effective coping techniques, boundaries, and self-care strategies.
- Facilitate and co-facilitate groups.
- Engage with teens during pop-in time by providing support, engaging in activities, etc.
- Assist with marketing and outreach efforts as needed.
- Complete follow up phone calls, text messages, and emails to teens and/or caregivers (parent or guardian).
- Adhere to safety protocols.
- Attend outreach events within the community as needed. Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Administrative Duties:
- Utilize Carelogic database to enter youth profiles, recovery tools, and case notes within 24 hours.
- Compose and sends end of night email daily.
- Complete applicable trainings, approved by supervisor, to enhance knowledge and skills.
Actively Engage with Team:.
- Communicate and collaborate with team members during shift.
- Assist Clinician in hospitalizing youth when needed.
- Participate in bi-weekly supervision with Manager.
- Effectively communicate with Loft Manager, Clinician and fellow RSS staff to debrief, consult, ask for and receive support as needed.
- Accountable for reviewing and responding to emails, including training material and resources.

- Comfort in discussing and working with a variety of mental health symptoms including: understanding individuals experiencing a mental health crisis may present with a variety of behaviors including verbal aggression, inappropriate language, loud voices, crying, etc.
- Acts within ethical standards and demonstrates healthy boundaries.
- Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.
- Intermediate level of skills in use of Microsoft office components of Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
Education and Experience
- Bilingual- English/Spanish preferred.
- Obtained or working towards Certified Recovery Support Specialist certification valid in Illinois.
- A Bachelor’s degree in allied health profession is preferred.
- Training in the Illinois Certified Recovery Support Professional Performance Domains: Advocacy, Professional Responsibility, Mentoring, and Recovery Support.
- A work history in mental health service delivery is desirable.
- Experience working with youth preferred .
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 26 per week
