Position Description
The City of Troy department of law is headed by the corporation counsel. This individual is appointed by the mayor. The law department is charged with the duty of rendering legal services and advice to the various agencies, departments, commissions, and counsels in the city of Troy, NY. In carrying out this obligation the department prepares the city council legislation and agenda, defends the city in numerous court proceedings, initiates litigation on behalf of the city, renders advice and opinions pursuant to requests from city departments and aids in negotiating contracts and settlements of disputes. In order to carry out these duties, the department employs additional attorneys and secretarial help.
The Deputy Corporation Counsel assists the Corporation Counsel with municipal contract review and/or any other duty within the Law Department in which the City or any officer thereof is interested or is a party. Acts as a liaison for legal inquiries received from all departments in city hall, drats and reviews legislation, grants, contracts, and other documents.
As directed by Corporation Counsel, appears for and protects the rights and interests of the City in actions, suits, arbitrations or proceedings by it or against the City’s Officer, employee, department, board of commission in connection with municipal business.
Performs other attorney duties as directed by Corporation Counsel.
