What are the responsibilities and job description for the Integrated Pest Management and Plant Health Technician position at National Tropical Botanical Garden?
We are now accepting applications for a Full Time Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Plant Health Technician. This position will not only help us ensure the survival of some of the most important plant collections in Hawaii, but also be a leader in mitigating the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles (CRB).
Ideal candidates have experience in all aspects of integrated pest management including, but not limited to:
● Establishing and operating a monitoring program for pests.
● Planning, coordinating, and training employees in integrated pest management principles and in the operation of equipment associated with the application of products.
● Identifying and interpreting signs and symptoms of plant stresses including pest diseases and abiotic responses.
● Knowledge of Federal (e.g. EPA), state, and local regulations for pesticide use and application, including continuing knowledge of associated human and environmental toxicity and exposure risks.
● Use of Global Positioning System and basic mapping techniques.
● Developing field test criteria to evaluate the efficacy of varied pest management techniques and pesticide application.
Requirements:
● Minimum 3 years experience using organic and chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides OR completion of a Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, or pest management.
● Horticulture and/or Botanical garden experience preferred.
● Ability to communicate through formal training as well as practical application by working side by side with staff.
● Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Docs and capable of producing reports.
● Must have appreciation for a scientific botanical research collection as well as food crop plantings, ornamental plantings and turf grass. Experience in working with federally listed endangered species preferred.
Must have a valid Pesticide Applicators license or be able to obtain one shortly after hire. Must have a valid Driver’s license and the ability to travel occasionally.
Schedule: Monday-Friday Days with some exceptions
Pay Range: $24-$27/ hr. DOE
