New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an innovative and interdisciplinary child welfare and social services agency that provides essential support to families with at least one family member who has a disability and/or chronic medical condition. Children and their families enter NAC’s services through the city’s foster care system, preventive services, or by way of community referral. All our clients have access to a wide array of services including intensive, multi-faceted support for children’s educational needs.
NAC is looking for a creative problem solver to join a fun, hardworking team as a Manager of Programs and Academic Interventions. This position will support NAC families and NAC staff in wide-ranging school/schooling and academic-related matters and in the development and identification of programmatic offerings. This position will be a key partner in shaping the vision of the department and acting as a liaison to all other departments at NAC.

Description of Responsibilities:
- Reports to the Senior Director of Education, Youth Development, and Government Relations.
- The “Programs” aspects of this position involve the conceptualization and realization of a range of educationally focused events, trainings, groups, and workshops. Examples include community bookfairs, caregiver literacy training, skills and craft workshops among others. This work involves significant inter-department coordination and communication, as well as the management of external partnerships and volunteers.
- “Academic Interventions” include the oversight of NAC’s tutoring operation, which is comprised of an in-house tutoring program and the coordination of external community-based tutoring arrangements. In-person tutoring involves establishing pairs/schedules, training volunteer tutors, and creating lessons when necessary.
- Regular assessment of young people’s learning needs and styles.
- Academic Interventions also focus on maintaining a literacy-rich environment throughout the NAC offices. This includes the maintenance and coordination of book donations; maintenance of the NAC Library; oversight of pre- and early-literacy programs such as “City’s First Readers” and “Reach Out and Read.” Distribution of books and books displays throughout the organization.
- Regular collaboration and consultation with Department staff and Senior Leadership in the development and implementation of programs, policies, and procedures.
- Potential direct supervision of staff and the preparation of timely evaluations of supervisees. This is not currently the case but will be contingent on funding circumstances.
- Regular assessment of educational needs across all NAC programs and departments.
- A lead role in the recruitment of Department interns and occasional support in the supervision of interns.
- Oversight of supervisee data maintenance and adherence of data deadlines.
- Assistance in the hiring process for Department vacancies. Organization-wide Responsibilities: * Oversight of and assistance with inter-department collaboration.
- Co-facilitation along with the Assistant Director of Education Advocacy of social worker and other staff training on optimally supporting the academic, educational, and socio-emotional needs of NAC children.
- Participation in various NAC committees/sub-committees as a representative of the Education Department.
- When necessary, attend Case Reviews, Family Team Conferences, Treatment Team Meetings, Adoption Disclosure Conferences, Elevated Risk Conferences, etc.
- Serve as a collaborator with NAC’s Quality Improvement team.
- Assist with the compilation and presentation of Department data in support of NAC’s Development department
- Assistance with grants management and with grant applications.
- Agency-wide communication of relevant information related to the Department and programmatic opportunities.
External Responsibilities:
- Liaise with school staff and city agency officials and offices.
- Build and maintain partnerships with outside organizations, groups, and companies.
- Development of a range of written materials along with editorial support of the Department’s literature, social media content, and other external correspondence.
- Participation in coalitions, collaborations, alliances, and working groups with outside organizations.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field in Social Sciences, Education, Social Work, and others.
- 3 to 5 years working with children and/or families.
Preferred Knowledge and Skill:
- Supervisory experience preferable.
- Teaching experience preferable.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral skills.
- Willingness to travel throughout NYC, as needed
- Proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
