Job Description
General Purpose: Employee of New Directions Northwest (NDN) a non-profit agency working at Powder River Correctional Facility New Directions Program, located in Baker City. The Counselor is responsible for addiction and criminality counseling services to Department of Corrections AICs in a 'therapeutic community' setting. The Counselor also assists security staff in providing safety and security at Powder River Correctional Facility.
Supervision Received: Counselor treatment delivery and security performance is reviewed and supervised by his/her Supervisor, and/or Program Director. Regular clinical supervision of at least one hour per week will be provided while in training.
DOC Expectations: The Oregon Accountability (OAM) depends upon a team approach to custody with the security-series personnel and non-security personnel communicating effectively to maintain safe, secure, and sanitary correctional environments, while preparing AICs for successful reentry into the community. The vast majority of DOC AICs will return to Oregon communities. Enhanced public safety, lower crime rates, and reduced recidivism can all be tied directly to attitudes and actions of correctional staff who must effectively apply ODOC rules and transition initiatives in their daily interaction with AICs. All staff are expected to model pro-social behaviors; reinforce positive behaviors; redirect negative behaviors; and effectively communicate observed behaviors to responsible program staff, administrators, and supervisors in support of OAM.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain a caseload of between ten and fifteen clients as allocated.
- Skills in the delivery of counseling services must be developed and maintained, as well as annual trainings.
- Will provide treatment planning, facilitate, and co-facilitate therapy groups; cover groups when needed, provide individual counseling using cognitive behavioral methods and assist in development and presentation of classes.
- Conduct one-on-one sessions with the residents on their caseload and as assigned for coverage.
- Read and evaluate homework assignments and assess movement to or from treatment groups.
- Complete assessments, DLA 20, weekly client individual session notes, weekly client schedules, monthly service plans, case staffing reviews, family/support calls, comprehensive treatment summaries, and other documentation within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Participate in daily staff interchange, utilizing staff chain of command appropriately to address concerns.
- Engage in Clinical Case Staffing meetings and all team meetings, contributing to group discussion.
- Maintain client files in an up-to-date, complete, and accurate manner.
- Use a two-way radio according to DOC standards, provide assistance to DOC personnel in emergencies, observe and document resident's behavior and facilitate drug-testing procedures.
- Assist with monitoring activities inside the facility such as recreation, resident meetings, community interaction, meals and other resident jobs and responsibilities.
- Report and document negative/positive resident behavior as witnessed to other Primary Counselors, and
assist the Clinical Team in the overall program development.
- Hold AICs accountable in a timely manner and utilize teachable moments when appropriate.
- Document client behaviors in DOC 400.
- Maintain appropriate and professional boundaries with all AICs and staff, always conducting self in a professional manner.
- Carry facility keys, key cards, and radio chits and use them according to DOC policy and procedure.
- Become familiar with and understand NDN and Department of Corrections policies and procedures.
- Must interact amiably and cooperatively with coworkers, AICs, and DOC staff, maintaining a positive attitude.
- Follow all directives from Supervisor and/or Program Director.
- Other duties as assigned within the general nature of the work described above.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements: Must obtain your CADC I in a timely manner but not to exceed 24 months after hire. Failure to obtain your CADC I in the allotted timeframe will result in disciplinary action up to termination of employment. Must maintain your CADC I certification.
Requirements: This position does not require the applicant to possess a valid Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor certificate. Must be a CADC-R (Registrant) in 'good standing' with MHACBO (Mental Health and Addiction Certification Board of Oregon). High school diploma/GED or three years in the corrections chemical dependency field is required. Must interact amiably with coworkers, DOC staff, AICs, and outside contacts.
Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) years' experience in the correctional chemical dependency treatment field.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Mobile two-way radios; computers; photocopy machine; fax machine; drug testing machine, and the driving of a 12-15-person transport van (when applicable). The position requires the employee to dress in a professional manner that meets the standards for professional social service employees. No tennis shoes, tee shirts, or jeans will be worn during the performance of this job; must maintain professional appearance.
